Can't startup after freeze and force shut down

    I took out the hdd from the laptop now and got an enclosure so that it functions as an external hdd. When I connect it to another pc running win 8.1 three drives show up for the external. For each one I get the error message "X:/ is not accessible. Data error (cyclic redundancy check)." I ran chkdsk for each drive. Below is the result.

    I then ran chkdsk from win10 installation media cmd prompt and got a different output. At Stage 2, instead of the unspecified error, the message is "Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50." For drive E: Stage 1 File Verification is completed (unlike above) but then the same error occurs "Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50."

    Um.. doesn't look too good for the HDD.. suggest checking its SMART parameters which might confirm it's duff.
    If however these are ok, then there's an outside possibility of recovering data from it- even rebuilding the partition structure.
    The first depends on whether you need to do it- whether you've backups- the second sounds a bit optimistic (you'd need an appropriate program).

    Question is, can you sacrifice the disk - or at least its contents- if so, it would be far safer to try formatting it and start from scratch.

    If you have disk images of the partitions (e.g. via Aomei Backupper, Macrium Reflect - both free- or other such programs, you can replace the disk if needed and restore the partitions.

    So you need to decide:
    a. Do you need to recover data from your disk
    or
    b. try reformatting it and see if that works

    For the sake of completion


    I did have a recent backup of files available so I tried formatting the HDD. The progress was extremely slow (about 10% each day) and it terminated unexpectedly at 90% when another program crashed. I did not try again after that but may in future, although I doubt that it will work.

    I ran the Ubuntu trial version from installation disc on my laptop to try and gauge whether any other hardware was affected. As everything worked normally I got a new HDD and popped it into the laptop and re-installed Win10 successfully. So the issue seems to just have been the HDD that reached its end-of-life.

    Glad to hear that.. I'm also experiencing my first HDD intermittent failure (fairly sure it's that) - the SMART parameters - which were fine until recently- are all over the place now. Laptop suddenly switches off - bang- off.

    I do have full disk image backups, so replacing the HDD is not too difficult.

    It's worth having a program that will show SMART parameters and check occasionally.
