    Stuck in 10240

    Hi

I'm new here and to win 10 so hoping to learn a lot from this group!

My one installation seems to be stuck in build 10240. I am not part of insider preview. The build I have was upgraded from win8.1 (upgrade install) and dates back to July/August. Although I am set to receive updates, I have never received the 1511 update on this computer.

I have read on this forum that I can do a repair install and retain all my files and apps. Does this include all apps including third party apps or only the apps provided by windows? I know I can do a clean install but would like to avoid this if I can since installing all my applications will take quite a while.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks DustSailor. But will this allow me to keep all my settings and applications, including third party ones? I guess that is what is stopping me from using the media creation tool without clarification.

Yes. I personally did it to over 7 computers. It will seem like a new install, but you will pass the screen that says What to Keep: settings, apps, etc.

It only upgrades it though. Afterward, check Windows Update for another important build release that compliments it, and you'll be set. It does take its sweet time, however. Take a shower, make some coffee... Check it periodically to make sure it is progressing.

I did have to 'repair' my antivirus program, as with all AVs, Windows (should) disables it to ensure the update is flawless. Also had to put the printers back in, but both things were easy, AV kept the product code, working like a charm.

Windows Updates isn't required if you select yes when it asks you if you want to download new updates as you will end up with 10586.14 post install. If you select no, then it will require Windows updates.

^ that is what I thought originally too, but it didn't work like that in my case... Can you personally confirm that? Maybe it just didn't download for me for whatever reason..

Worked for me as I did in-place repair installs 4 times. Only time it didn't work and got stuck on searching for new updates was when I ran the installer from a newly created admin account instead of the original. I did that so it would not recreate the layertiledatabase folder immediately which would not restore the OOBE start menu with tiles.

I had to do Windows Update after the upgrade to 10586 to get to 10586.14 on 3 computers and 1 VM.

With my Windows Update from 10240, it updated to 10586.14 directly, the only thing WU update after 10586.14 was Adobe Flash for Internet Explorer.
