And IMHO the Start Screen is far better than the Start Menu.
I agree with your above quote. You can of course with the latest preview set up either one or the other, but it would be nice to just be able to toggle between the two, thereby satisfying the needs of all.

I get giggles every time I read posts from these "I am an expert, only my opinion matters, my opinion is a fact" geeks. To keep the fun coming I even took a couple of them back from my ignore list, it's more fun to read their posts than let the system hide them from me.

Windows 8 / 8.1 a failure? A version of Windows which already has double the users worldwide than combined versions of the 13 year old OS X, yet Mac and its parent Apple are considered an established, good operating system and a good business. Windows 8 / 8.1 has doubled its share in one year, OS X got a bit over 10% increase in same time.

I am not willing to call an OS on fifth of all computers worldwide a failure.

As much as I am not a fan of windows 8 gaudiness and do indeed prefer the simplicity of xp over even seven or eight I also enjoy the "experts" saying that 8 was/is a failure. *cough* 10 is interesting and could do with a little cleanup and luckily it seems pretty customizable. I had driver and memory issues with 8 from the gitgo on an OEM Lenovo laptop that drove me crazy to no end. Even after a hard drive change and clean install of 8 it was sluggish and unresponsive. I know it was a driver issue as once seven was loaded it ran just fine. It has ten on it now with i7 8gb mem and 1tb dual boot with 7. The speed of the ten alone is worth the upgrade. It loads twice as fast as 7 and 3 times faster than 8 and is ready to go as soon as the screen loads. I am impressed. To me it harkens to the old Vista/7 comparisons as 7 isn't all that different than vista in the looks or feel department. 10 is a big departure from the 8 look in some aspects but not in others. The speed man it's the Speed that truly makes me like it. Looking forward to it's release.

P.S. I am not an "Expert" although I do have a store / repair facility and sell / fix a few dozen pc's a week. Including Windows, Linux and the other unmentionable company *snort*.

Sorry for hijacking your post there Kari I just love the response you had.

Is it really the OS that's slow or is it the disk that is slow. I just bought a new HP 17" laptop for the wife. It has good specs - A8 quad CPU. 6GB of RAM, but that 5400 RPM HDD really slows it down. I can't wait for the SSD that I ordered for it to arrive.

Those buggers make it more and more difficult to switch the disk. There are no more disk bays. You have to remove the whole back panel to get at it.
Likely depends on the manufacturer and the size of the laptop. My ASUS laptop has a removable panel for hard drive access, just 3 screws. It's big though, 17.3 inch screen, full sized keyboard and has dual drive bays. On my Wife's slim Acer laptop you have to remove the whole back cover. About 20 Something screws. If you've never done this before watch out for different length screws. If you put a long one in where there was a short one you could damage something. Look out for some that may be hidden under the rubber feet or a sticker. I hate it when they do that.
You would love the notebook I'm using right now (Lenovo B590). Just remove two screws, pull the bottom opening cover away from the hinge and, presto, just about everything you will ever need to get at is laying fully exposed. Now, if only all I had to do was snap my fingers and the parts would jump out and back in on their own.

While my system was down I used my daughter’s laptop with 7 on it. Although I spent 4 years with 7 knowing it well, it seemed awkward navigating it.
    Laptops are horrible to use.

I really hate those scratchpad things.

I normally "push" stuff to my laptop from my desktop (over the network) rather than try to "pull" stuff from the desktop using the laptop.
I also detest the touchpads. I disable mine after booting up and use a wireless mouse.

Is that the new modern math or am I counting wrong?
Anyone that knows anything about keyboarding would know you're counting it wrong.
    OK, I counted it wrong. Alt/f4 = 2 + hold Win key = 1 + strike period key = 1 + strike down key =1 =3?

    You really don't get it?

In HG's example, the ALT + F4 has nothing to do with closing the desktop, it's just to close the current app and is not needed if no apps are open. To close the desktop you need 3 key presses (WIN + PERIOD + DOWN ARROW) exactly as he told.

Besides, MS can’t help it if someone doesn’t get the concept.
    Pure comedy gold.
Seriously though, it's more like we got the concept, and rejected in thoroughly....

    But you knew that....
I think most on these forums use a computer more for a hobby, consumption, and game playing rather than business, therefore most wouldn’t know enough to truly get the concept.

I guess what I should ask you is what exactly do you use a computer for?

I love change, but I have a deal breaker prerequisite. The new thing absolutely has to be better than what it replaces. Otherwise, what's the point.

Change for change sake....??? Not so much.

And imho, tifkam was not better than whet it tried to replace. Not even close to "as good as".
    IMO TYO (that’s your opinion).

Correct me if I'm wrong. You tried a few Modern apps in 8RP like Mail, Calendar, etc., so you decided then you didn't like them. I'll assure you they've come along way.

Given its relative failure, seems quite a few share my opinion.
Perhaps if they had given more of a choice, allow folks an easier time running them side by side, folks may have been more tolerant. I'm sure I would have. But, alas, they tried to ram it down our throats as a fait accompli....

And that type of arrogance just pisses people off.
No one shoved it down your throat as others mentioned. And how long are you going to hold a grudge? Geez. It’s been over two years now.

I know some people do like the metro style, I get that.
But to me, I find the tiles just look freakin childish. Sorry, but that is just my personal opinion on how they appear to me.
OK, so you don’t like the look. There are third party personalization programs for that. Have you looked at any Start Screen threads all? Here’s one to start with. Very unique. Post your Start Screen! - Page 17

BTW, I think icons are absolutely boring. I call them iconosaurs.

I on other hand, would spend more time looking for those keys than actually pushing them ad to that having to remember all the keystrokes, All that makes it easier for me to do as much as possible using mouse.
Windows combo keys have remained pretty much the same over the years. 7 to 8 was probably the biggest change and additions. Been using so long that I can pretty much do them without looking at the keyboard, although if the top F key row I do.
