There was a time I had my desktop loaded with shortcuts. Now I have 3 shortcuts and a folder on the left side and a weather app on the right side.

I like an empty desktop. I use a vertical Taskbar at left, with Quick Launch with icons to the programs I use most often. Notification area set up to show all icons and notifications. I use then OneNote to keep my favorites, links, memos, task and ToDo list and such, which effectively replaces pinned taskbar items, Sticky Notes and website shortcuts on desktop.
This is what is so great about Windows, there are many different ways of doing the same thing. There are many choices. You get trouble when someone can't set stuff up the way they like it. Aero being a prime example. The transparent glass is loved by many and can be turned off if you are not a fan in Windows 7. Windows 8 it was removed and replaced with an anaemic look. Just give us the choice........
My world is flat anyhow because I use the Hugh Contrast Theme - see picture 1. And I have no problem with that. I can see much clearer what is on the screen. Click on the picture (twice) and you will see what I mean.
Anther option for shortcuts is the AppLauncher with comes with the sidebar from here - see picture 2. I have not put anything in yet because I keep my shortcuts in a toolbar.
