Windows 10 running issue after an app update

    Hello all,

I'm trying to fix my next door neighbors Win 10 (home) desktop issue. So this much I know.... sometime around 12/18 the pc was doing an app update (AVG) maybe the home owner wasn't home at the time ... the end result was black screen and banner complaining about windows32.exe missing. My thinking is mayme you had a power hit during the update and some files/dirs are missing. I tried to boot the pc from a win 10 flash drive and do a restore but it failed. I found a way to get into safe mode ( booting off the hdd) and the restore finished but the wasn't right. Graphics was restored but somethings didn't work ...like the left mouse button on the start icon ... or in LAN settings proxy is default and can't be changed ... the apply button is grayed out... ie doesn't launch but chrome or firefox does. I had to use regedit to change 03 ( proxy is enabled) to 09 automatically detect settings) and that allowed the internet to work. And there's another issue right click start - settings doesn't work and neither does right click on desktop to change display. I just can't find anymore restore points on his PC. My pc is win 10 pro and his is win10 home ... that shouldn't be the issue correct ??? he is admin in user settings. I just can't believe that this problem can't be solved .. after it's win 10. I have 2 desktops one is win 10 pro and the other is win 7 pro ... my win 7 is powered down but the win 10 is on ups so could that be the issue .. loosing power during an update??? I forgot you also can't save anything onto the task bar.

    Thanks

    Dale G.

Hi, as the PC appears to have multiple symptoms and it's not clear what happened to it, some basic checks are called for.

I'm going to guess your neighbour does not use disk imaging routinely as is so often recommended here- it's relatively quick and easy to restore an image of Windows or other partitions from a previously created disk image without technical support. E.g. Macrium reflect (free).

So.. some hours of work are required.
    1. First check your disk(s):
Download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) (includes SSDs)
(This gives exceptionally good text comments)
Post a screenshot of its GUI using the Insert Image icon above your post.
If all disks are reported as good, continue.

Note: there is a portable version I've seen- I've not tried it. Other- free options- but more basic: Crystal Diskinfo, HD Tune (Health tab and Error scan tab).

    2. Now check your file system:

From an admin command or powershell prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 | Tutorials
    or
How to read Event Viewer log for Chkdsk in Windows 10 [Tip] | dotTech
    or
How Do I See the Results of a CHKDSK that Ran on Boot? - Ask Leo!
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.

    3. If ok, then from an admin command or Powershell prompt run
    SFC /SCANNOW
    and post the summary report.

    4. You should also try to do a full AV scan as early as possible, whether using an installed reputable antivirus program, Defender, or a downloadable boot disk if necessary.

Which Windows build is the PC using?
This can be really important, and most people don't mention it or include it in their specs.
    Windows key + R, winver

Once you have posted the results of these checks, it may be clearer what to do next.

OK Win + x brings up the same thing as does mouse + right button

so right click mouse + run + powershell + command = " You must be an administrator …………….." same as his or mine …. on both PC's the user is the admin

The admin console is not accessible as far as I can doesn't work on both

The one thing is different between both pc's is in User Accounts and when I press "make changes …." the screen with gear comes up and the same with right click mouse in screen … screen with gear in the center....
… right mouse "display settings" screen with gear in the center ….. his doesn't work at all

my ver is 1803 os build 17134.472 and my mouse L & R buttons works and his I'll get today

    Thanks again

Hi, please do those steps in order - it's a logical sequence- starting with testing the disk.

If you're talking about step 2, then rt click Powershell and click run as admin

Your Cortana result probably won't have the right pane - that's in 1809. Rt click Powershell in the left, click run as admin.

    You should see

I don't know what you mean about an 'admin console' - sorry.
