Windows Moving Between Monitors By Themselves

Hey guys, first post on the forum and quite an annoying bug. I'm running Windows 10 Professional, and have a triple monitor setup. I have two 22" Dell monitors side by side, and I have my 55" Vizio TV mounted on the wall above my monitors. The Dell monitors are connected to my video card via VGA/DVI connections, and the TV is connected via HDMI.

Well, the annoying problem I'm having is that Windows 10 will randomly move my opened windows between monitors, but only when I'm not using the computer. For example, the Dell monitor on the right is my "main" display, where I usually keep my windows open (Chrome, uTorrent, etc.). If I turn off my monitor, later when I come back, I'll find the windows I left open on my left monitor, so I end up having to drag them back over. Another example is when I used Plex Home Theater. I run that program on my Vizio TV at all times. But if I don't close the program before I turn the TV off, it ends up getting moved to my Dell monitor on the left. Also, when I have my TV turned off, and I turn it on, it blacks out both of my Dell monitors for maybe 5 seconds, and during that time it moves whatever windows I had open on my right Dell monitor over to the left one.

I had Windows 8 and Windows 7 on this PC previously, and I never had any of these issues. I have the most current video drivers installed, and there's nothing that I can think of that might fix this very annoying problem.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

Hello hacku Welcome to the Ten Forums!

Not having a triple set up I run with a pair of identical lcd monitors here and would have to assume that for some reason Windows is defaulting over to the secondary Dell when having the primary turned off or when the system sits idle for some time. 10 is going into a type of stand by mode while not going to sleep or hibernating on you there. This may be a power saving option if you haven't gone in to make any changes with any power plan and are still running the defaul Balanced power plan option.

The first thing done here for that even on VMs(Virtual Machines) is go in and change it from the Balanced to Performance plan when not creating a new custom plan and setting the display option to "never" so the displays never turn off after 15, 20, 30min, an hour, 2hrs. etc. They always stay on. The second remote desktop only sees that single display on while taking of some task that can't be seen to remotely there.

One option you might want to consider would be a 3rd party software like UltraMon or DisplayFusion for allowing the software to manage things including having different wallpapers on the different monitors as well as the tv. I ended up buying both for 7 years back and they run on the 64bit 10 as well.

The program selected would have to allow for the 3rd display if wanting that to be Number #3 for the 3rd desktop extension not simply a mirror of either primary or secondary displays. With either of those two or another similar software you create a new profile from the initial set up and usually have the option for several.

Once you have everything situated the way you want it you simply save the new profile which can be called up on later if needed. Say Windows has an oops! day and the displays get fizzled or things are changed following an update. With the 3rd party program on that allows you to tweak things as to how they will be displayed for the most part.

You also now have the Virtual Desktop feature seen in 10 where you can simply move a running app over to the second desktop hidden from view while away which might keep 10 from moving things around on you. That was another thought about how to correct this.

Thanks for the tips. I'll give that a try and see what happens.

I've run into this a few times but on a dual display set up here where somehow a windows moved to the secondary was found back on the primary. Or I might see a browser window suddenly default over to the secondary I attributed to the optional move button UltraMon adds to each window to allow you to simply click to move rather then constantly needing to drag each window. That comes in very handy when having several things open at the same time and you need to clear up space on the primary.

I suggested the software route since that can provide additional options not included in Windows you can work with. So it wouldn't be a total waste of time if the problem should continue to be seen at times. The additional settings I should mention in the Power Plan advanced would be turning off the drives atfter so mainy minutes which by default is 20 minutes. If your OS drive goes limber that may explain why Windows is suddenly moving things around. But it does seem to suggest a maintainence type service running in the background may be the culprit.
