    Command Prompt won't open

Hi, whenever I try to open the Command Prompt in Win10 (cmd.exe) I get the following pop up: cmd.exe - Application Error
The Application was unable to staart correctly (0XCoooo142). Click OK to close the application.

I should add this was an upgrade to Win10

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance..

If you can open an elevated powershell window (i.e. right click and run as Administrator), run the command sfc /scannow.

I've tried all the methods available and I get the same error message for both the command prompt and the Windows powershell.

In that case, see if you may be able to run SFC at boot using OPTION ONE instead. :)

    Hi
I had the same problem. I fixed it by enabling the admin account and applying a password, then, removing my main accounts type from the administrators type and making it a regular account.

I then rebooted, logged into the admin account and tested the CMD function. It works. Log out and log into my regular account.
I then selected run as administrator and it requests the admin username and password and voila, it works. CMD can now be run.

    Welcome to TenForums @JollyJamma

That would suggest that the profile for your main account had been corrupted in some way to cause this problem. It's not recommended practice to leave the built-in Administrator enabled (or to give it a password, that could make emergency repairs impossible should you loose it).

Now you have the Administrator available, I would use it to create another normal user account and make that an admin. You could then remove the password and disable Administrator. Now you can use the name/password of this new admin account in the UAC prompt.

A more thorough but time-consuming fix would be to change over to use this new admin account as your main account. A new account is unlikely to have any problems running the command prompt. This would of course mean migrating the documents, user files and settings across to it, so you may prefer to stick with the old main account and just use the new one for the authority to 'run as administrator', as you have been doing with the Administrator up until now.

I always create a second local admin account anyway and just use it for maintenance, it means you won't have to enable the built-in Administrator should problems recur.
