I just upgraded to windows 10 and I have some questions

    1) Does 10 check for check for updates automatically? if so, how do I turn that option off?
    2) Earlier I checked for updates and it automatically started installing as soon as it was done checking, is there a way to select which updates to install?
    3) How much does the battery drain if you have the "hey cortana" voice activation on?

That's all the questions I can think of right now. I'll reply to this thread if I have anymore.

    1) Yes, as soon as you connect to internet. Not unless you have you have 10 Enterprise and then you can only delay install
    2) No, it will install all. No choice like in prev Windows versions. If you want, you can disable device driver updates only. Read how here - How to Uninstall and Block Updates and Drivers on Windows 10
    3) It's always in the background unless you kill the process. Very little drain, much less than opening a browser window or running anti-virus.

thanks. Why does it seem to take longer to boot up than it did in 8.1?

Should not do should be faster.

I have 20 apps opening but no CROME or IE11 that could have a lot to do with it
Also I am on fast start up and a fairly new laptop only 6 months old
Also when I shut down my CCleaner does remove all the rubbish
Also might be something to do with your Anti virus,
    I have McAfee
Toshiba also updated my BIOS before I installed windows 10 and the latest drivers
So cant help you much more on that

Here are your options for configuring updates in Windows 10, unfortunately they're far more limited than previous versions of Windows: http://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-...ading-updates/

In short, if you have Windows 10 Pro you can configure that behaviour through a Group Policy Editor setting. If you have just the regular version of Windows 10 you have to use the "metered connection" option in settings, but that only works if you connect to the internet via wi-fi.

Not sure what's going on there. After shutting down every night, mine takes about 5 sec to get to log in screen. Another 60-90 sec to load everything. Try and Shut Down instead of Restart and report back.

You could also open Task Manager by right click on taskbar and click 'More details' then 'Startup' tab and see if you can disable some items at startup. But these have nothing to do with getting to the log on screen. I find windows 10 a lot faster than 8.1 in these respects.

Well your thread is saying you just upgraded, so it may take a couple days to sort things out, index everything, and get going normally. I had delays when I upgraded. It would show a black screen for about a minute when powered on, and then be slow at the start screen. After about a week things started going faster. Now it's almost instant.

Did HP upgrade the BIOS and its own system drivers before windows 10 was installed
Why asking is because my Toshiba Notebook updated the BIOS and Toshiba drivers, then informed me it was ready for windows 10, before I upgraded from windows 8.1
Then once installed it upgraded the graphics card
