Disable Zip File Compressed Folders File Explorer

Hi all...Using Win10 Pro x64. I would like to disable windows showing .zip files in explorer as a folder...When you highlight it the contents inside the .zip are shown in the right pane view. I've scoured the net and found ways for Win7(which I did disable .zip folders on my other Win7 machine) and Vista, perhaps 8 too but I don't want to risk trying a method for older versions of windows.

Has anyone been able to find a solution/reg hack or whatever to disable .zip folder?

Your solution worked like a charm.

By browsing windows forums(here, window7) I've discovered you're quite a registry hack authority.

Thanks again Brink. Next I am going to tackle the THIS PC items so my navigation pane don't look like a long cash register receipt.

I've located your solution for that as well.

Hi Brink,
It's been a while since this solution stopped working on Win 10 (I use v2004).
In addition, I checked in the registry the 2 bellow values have been deleted.

Code:

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CompressedFolder\CLSID]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.zip\CLSID]

However, the following value is still present

Code:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{E88DCCE0-B7B3-11d1-A9F0-00AA0060FA31}

Any solution?

Hello coukou,

Disabling ZIP files in Windows 10 will now prevent being able to open ZIP files.

It is not recommended anymore unless you are using a 3rd party ZIP program instead.

You do not want to delete that key.

Instead, you could set the default app for ZIP files to be WinRar or 7-Zip if you like.

Choose Default Apps in Windows 10

In addition, use Open with to open a ZIP file with either program.
