    I hate W10

I don't totally hate it. It's just there's so many problems. Vista was an outright virus, but W10 is really acting like malware.

Hi. I'm new here. I was on Seven forum and Eight forum. Now on Ten.

W10 isn't Vista, but there's other problems with the design that are really frustrating in a similar way that Vista was. It's like Microsoft doesn't seem to want to just get it right. I was fine with W8. People complained about the interface, so MS made some improvements. Great. But then they created way more problems than necessary.

When I first installed W8, I had no idea about the Microsoft Account logon or anything like that. I didn't know how it worked. After lots of messing around, I realized it was like two operating systems in one that gave the user the option to install two different and completely separate types of software. Normal Windows and WinRT. Almost like having regular Windows 7 with like virtual Android OS installed. W8 was like two OS in one.

At first, I didn't understand that, and the interface frustrated me alot. Like I was trying to put shortcuts for WinRT apps onto the main desktop. I didn't realize that they're two completely separate sets of software that don't work with each other. It's as if there really was two separate OS. I could install software for the main Windows OS. And I could install WinRT software for the Start dashboard thing. And I was fine and happy. And enjoyed it.

It didn't take long for me to realize that I should unplug my internet when installing W8, and use an offline user. And during installation, turn all those weird optional settings off. So I ended up having to have 2 users aside from Administrator. One for offline and one for online. That offline user would be the main user. And would not be able to use any of the WinRT apps. The second user logged in with the MSA. And would specifically be used only for WinRT apps. Because when you use your MSA to log in, it's almost like logging in online. Yes you're on your desktop. But it's almost like it's working seamlessly as if you were on some website.

So for Windows 10, the installation had those same weird optional settings. But then took the problem to another level. Once installation is complete, there's more settings that need to be configured before even plugging into the internet. There's still all these privacy settings. I don't even know everything I have to do to configure it so that the OS doesn't do anything unwanted in the background. I just want a simple OS that works without all the extra bloat.

On top of that, I like to do all my updates manually. Which means I don't want Windows to be using my resources, and accessing the internet to randomly check for updates. Yet the settings are so screwed that I'm not even completely sure how to fix it. I completely disabled Windows Update in group policy, and I think it did the trick. Not so sure. And since I prefer third party security, I'm really hoping I'm not going to run into problems with disabling the native security. As well as problems in I've had in the past with W8 with third party security causing updates to screw up.

For the past few years, Apple has been making way more money than MS. I know it's all marketing of overpriced inferior products, and that's mainly why it bugs me a bit how much money Apple is making. But at the same time, Apple has shown time and time again that they just get it. Sure they have their fair share of similar problems, but they're not as bad as MS when it comes to doing really obnoxious crap for no reason that make people hate them.

It's like W8 was fine, but there was no legitimate explanation to humans what that extra dashboard interface was. When they could have left the Start menu as it was, and added a separate dashboard explaining that the apps that ran on it are a completely different api from normal Windows software, and don't work with normal Windows applications. And now all these problems with W10. It's like Vista was a virus. And W10 is malware that uses system resources and accesses the internet.

I'm looking forward to DX12 and seeing how well Cortana works. And hopefully figuring out how to get around all the problems inherent in W10. Most of all, I really hope that MS fixes W10 so that it stops acting like malware.

Actually it's even a bigger piece of junk than Windows 8.
    How could Microsoft outdo themselves?
It's all about advertising on your computer and socializing.
That's not what computers are for.
Windows 11 therefor promises to be more horrible than we can imagine.
    Thanks you Microsoft......

There is NOT going to be a Windows "11". MS announced some time ago that Windows 10 is the last version they're going to develop and distribute. Windows is now shifting to an incremental model where features will be added over time, but instead of having to upgrade to a new OS version, you'll be able to download and install the features -- but some will require a fee to do that.

    Hmm.

I've been a lifelong Mac user since 1986. Worked in the first West Coast Apple Store in the early years. Last year I was forced to try Windows (for a very specific software) and I found Windows 8 to be the stickiest gooiest piece of dung I ever had to rinse off my leg. Withsome extra scraping with a rusty shovel.

Considering how many PC users hated it -- this wasn't a Mac thing. There's a REASON why MS gave 10 away. Mea Culpa. It didn't bother me that it was different from OS X. Well, yeah, sometimes, but I've been running Linux distros for years in VBox. And so I like different -- if different is done well. Windows 8.1 was the worst 'distro' I had ever touched. It simply didn't work.

I sent that PC back to Amazon and decided to wait out Windows 10. I didn't have high hopes since every other build wouldn't work in Virtualbox. I actually abandoned the insider program. And I wasn't buying all the MS hype about 10. It's THIS, it's THAT. Yeah yeah yeah. It's also playing OSX/Linux ketchup with fries. Please...

But I still needed said Windows only (eyeroll) software and so I tried again. Wow. What a difference a year makes. For the first time in my life I've witnessed a Windows OS that isn't so insular. An OS that is actually aware of Apple, Linux, and all sorts of niceties offered in all sorts of places. I wouldn't say it's the best OS in the market -- but I would say it's the best Windows ever.

And it's just getting started, which is kinda funny.

So I'm sharing a Mac user's perspective here. Someone who doesn't give a crepe about gaming I might add. My love is an efficient OS first, hardware second, software choices third.

    1. The biggest difference I see is memory management. Wowee wow. Compared to OS X? No contest. OS X needs around 6-8GBs where Win10 typically doesn't know what to do with more than 4.

    2. The GUI is fairly straightforward, gets out of the way, and seemingly rock solid. (I'm a person who went straight to 10 and collected $200. No upgrading an established personalized OS.) I've always had issues with Windows primitive look (sorry guys and gals), but not here. I still think OS X is smoother and silkier, but in a year or so of updates that may not be as obvious a distinction. I can wait.

    3. I've noticed that OEMs have started to make laptops that aren't the sorriest looking things you've ever seen. I don't need something looking like a Mac to make me feel better. I just don't want some Best Buy Hasbro PC that ships broken with 20 decals all over it. I'm a big Asus fan at the moment. I'm rockin a matte 15 inch, 8GBs of RAM, and 256 SSD -- all for $799. My unit routinely sells out on Amazon and is sold for $200-$400 more at that point. Oh, in the Mac world, this unit would run for about $1599. heehee

Understand my primary computer will always be an iMac. Because the virus/malware thing is an unnecessary stress -- whereas in OS X and Linux you can simply sit in front of your computer relaxed. But if Win10 keeps on the path it's on -- all my second 'basic' computers won't be Chromebooks, Macbooks -- but Windows 10.

    Just sayin'...

Can I just say something I thing windows 10 is the best one yet, I had trouble with 7, 8,8.1 with IE11 or any of the IE they some how always crashed or froze my laptop or closing the web page I was on.
Since bringing out 10 and Edge I have had not trouble at all. so you might find it is IE11 that is causing the trouble and not windows 10 its self
Disable IE11 like I did and you will find windows 10 will work as a dream. it is fast no freezes, no shutting you out of sites or popping up telling you in has run into a problem and needs to close.

Can't wait for native gaming to fully and completely come to Linux. Then there will never be a need for Windows ever again.

You spent your entire message talking about Windows 8, and almost nothing talking about Windows 10 and why you hate it... strange..

All you say is "all these problems" and we have no idea what you're referring to. Most of us don't have any issues with Windows 10.

This is all very true. But the point you're missing is that The new WinRT part is slowly replacing the old part, kind of like how the first versions of OSX originally were linked in with the old OS9, and over time the OS9 compatibility went away.

The "Desktop" version of Windows has reached its zenith. Very little new development is happening in Desktop land, and almost all development is happening in WinRT land. When's the last time you saw a "new" Windows desktop app?

Windows as we knew it is dead, it just doesn't know it yet. Each new release, another chunk falls off the shuffling corpse. Apparently lots of users don't know it yet either, and keep thinking that smell is the new OS. It's not, it's the old one.
