Ok, I have hundreds of MKVs. Usually they are quite large, if you have many MKVs in one folder, of course it will choke populating it.

MKV files are automatically associated with the Movies and TV tile app. But the Tile app CANNOT play back the Audio portion of an MKV. So what you can do is install VLC and associate MKVs with that immediately, and this should stop. It's because they are assigned to the wrong handler, that's wy the folders hang.

The other issue is that all Video files will insist on showing a Poster Frame if you set Large Tile view.

So, set the folders that have MKV's to Detail or List view, then they should not choke populating. Hope this helps. Mainly it's understanding your content and codecs, no other player but VLC for Desktop can play ALL codecs, and once you assign it to all file types, your problems will vanish.

Probably talking crap here. I wonder if its gathering thumbnail information "on the fly" even if you're not using thumbnails. It's not a solution per se , no harm in trying this.
This will take away the option to view thumbnails in explorer.

Actually, that's a good alternative. Media files especially images and movies, have to be partially decoded for Explorer to be able to show the poster tile. It has to do this the moment you open Explorer to the folder that has MKVs and other formats. So it's a good idea. But installing VLC will prevent Movies and TV from trying to generate the previews, it's a faulty tile app. VLC is the only real valid player (desktop version)

The only time I've seen .mkv files used is on torrent sites , What program actually uses them?

Or use winff to convert them to something more friendly if windows 10 doesn't like mkv

i think that this thread is about the same problems mentioned here:
Slow refresh of icons - Windows 10 Forums

i just posted a reply there but also could not find a solution when clicking on the problematic mkvs. just for the slow loading when opening the folder that contains the mkv.

    Since you asked.

    http://www.matroska.org/technical/whatis/index.html

MKV is a flexible, open standard video file format that has quickly become the preferred file extension for high definition video on the Internet. The MKV container can include video, audio, and features such as alternate audio tracks, multilingual subtitles and chapter points, as well as rich metadata including cover art, ratings, descriptions and more. MKV offers a richer media experience than any other current format, and that’s why we chose it as the file container for DivX Plus® video.

In addition to the above it's a flexable, convenient, fast way to rip a large DVD/Blu-Ray collection to NAS for streaming to different devices over LAN while retaining the "disc features."

They're playable with pretty much any modern media player and will stream from most device oriented media servers. (Twonky etc...)

Anecdotally I have a large collection and have not experienced this OP's difficulties. May not be a "Windows problem" per se....
