After Interrupted HD Repair Windows 10 wont boot

    Hiya

i _think_ this is the correct forum.

PC has Windows 8.1 on SSD and Windows 10 on HDD.

The install of Windows 10 was over a Windows 7 installation - and i had it keep all data and programs. Which is did successfully.

When booting in 8.1, it decided to repair the disk with Windows 10.
A fuse blew and now Windows 10 will start to boot (windows logo showing) and then will just go to a blank screen.

Trying to access the Windows 10 HDD from 8.1 - gives

Running EaseUS Data Recovery on the drive shows that the original data is there..

So my question is how can i rescue my Windows 10 with all my apps and data?

Hello buzzbuzz Welcome to the Ten Forums!

Having a fuse go or a breaker tripped on you isn't a garden party! I've been right in the middle of something and lost files, data from that type of incident on occasion. If you made the Recovery Drive for 10 or made up the live media for 10 then you have readily available options to work with in order to get 10 running again. (Notation due to the size exceeding 4gb a 5gb or larger usb flash drive will be required to see that made up)
That would be the Recovery and Repair Tools included on the live media for things like the Automatic Startup Repair tool, other troubleshooting options, that includes the command prompt option still, and the last resort of the PC Reset that will bring you back to Day One with the need to install programs again!

What you can do from the 8.1 side is right click on the G drive 10 is on and open up the Tools tab to run the Error checking option. That will start up the Disk Check tool to scan for any disk errors. And besides the startup repair option and the PC Reset you also have the option to see an in place Upgrade to Repair type install that will 10 going again. Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums[2]=Installation%20and%20Setup

These are some of the most commonly used repair options available. If you need to see the 10 installation media created having seen an online upgrade by way of the 10 app you will also want to follow the steps seen in the guide for downloading 10. I think that will be your best option and you might even be able to save the installation without the need for either the Reset or clean install seen again. When arriving at the "Install Now" screen you simply look down at the bottom left corner of that screen for the repair tools link to enter into that area when booted from the key you saw made up. Hopefully it will only take a few minutes of repair time while booted live from the media.

    For the Recovery Drive I found a rather small Kingston brand 8gb flash drive with a large hole at the opposite end from the actual plug that allows you to put it on a key chain to have with you! Those run cheap and are still reliable drives while they can tend o get quite warm if left plugged in for long periods of time. You can see what that looks like at : https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Kingston-DataTraveler-SE9-G2-USB-flash-drive-8-GB/3603484.aspx?cm_cat=BingShopping&cm_ite=3603484&cm_pla=NA-NA-KIN_DR&cm_ven=acquirgy&ef_id=VchF4gAAAModd-1T:20150914045335:s&s_kwcid=AL!4223!10!8204846036!{OrderItemId}

You can also find Micro flash drives that look like mini plugs with end caps since they keep getting smaller in size! :) Amazon.com: Kingston Digital 8GB DataTraveler Micro USB 2.0 (DTMCK/8 GB): Computers Accessories

WInload.exe: "required file missing or corrupted! That sums up a lot right there suggesting the run of the System File Checker if you can get the command prompt option going to enter the "sfc /scannow" command or the "chkdsk /r" command to have the DiskCheck tool try to fix a disk error problem. Either due to some type of error on the drive the winload.exe can't be loaded or something knocked the file out entirely. I hate to say it but.....

    How to Refresh Windows 10

    Information
If you're having problems with Windows 10 on your PC, you can try to refresh, reset, or restore it. Refreshing your PC fixes software problems by reinstalling the OS while preserving the user data, user accounts, and important settings. All other preinstalled customizations are restored to their factory state. In Windows 10, this feature no longer preserves user-acquired Windows apps.
That came right from the top of the " How to Refresh Windows 10 " guide! If you are unable to replace that file by way of the System File Checker or somehow get 10 up and running from the Command prompt options since the SFC if finding any file missing will prompt for the installation media if not in the drive or plugged then it will come to the choice of the reset or trying a repair install by running an upgrade over the present copy to fix what got broke. You might just have one problem for that however. 10 did finish upgrading from your information. But! Something got lost and needs to be replaced!

Why the Disk Check tool? Often errors will make it seem like an important system file or two is missing yet found later on the drive due to some other type of error. This can come up if you had any hard boots lately?! as well as when having programs lock solid forcing you to hit the reset or power button if the Ctrl-Alt-Del combo isn't able to get you out of it! scheduling the Disk Check run however is out at the moment and why I suggested running that live from the 10 media and not while in 8.1 is simply this would be 10's version there to correct any errors it can.

Now if 10 did stay running long enough and was found activated if you checked on that at all you can now simply turn around and scratch worrying about the upgrade since it may be a bad case of dead issue?! When planning to get 10 on and running here I expected it might take a few clean installs to get things right and didn't place everything on just the initial upgrade since that type of install can be a mess at times.

Note if you did look and find 10 activated and are not able to fix the startup issue which may require running the Startup repair option a few more times along with the SFC and DiskCheck then you would need to plan the 10 replacement install to insure the best results. You're not there yet however. You first want to exhaust those options before simply running the Reset this PC option which is almost a full clean in that all programs would need to be put back on as well.

    Hi

thanks for that - managed to get into a dos prompt then I did a full chkdsk - and then rebooted - no luck

i then tried a sfc /scannow but it said there was a scan already scheduled and to reboot -

"There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart windows and run sfc again

which of course led to nowhere.
Presumably theres a method for unscheduling the imaginary sfc scan ?

kk that message about a missing winload.exe probably means that the power down from the blown fuse either corrupted or damaged the booting code on the hard drive. When it tells you that winload.exe is missing what it is actually telling you is that the boot code necessary to find winload.exe is damaged. Your best bet is to google for repair of the MBR, BCD table and the boot code. Carefully write all the instructions then start the computer in advanced mode from media on usb drive and choose command prompt the follow the google proc for the boot code repair. In my experience that winload.exe message is boot code corruption 97 percent of the time. You may have to repeat the boot code repair proc at least 3 times between reboots to get it all done.

This is why I had suggested the Startup Repair tool be run a few times as well while manually rebuilding the BCD will take some instructions. One good set you can go by is explained at How To Rebuild the BCD in Windows

The page there also points to how to go about getting into and moving around in the Advanced Startup Options as well. Essentially the same steps you would take for Vista apply to each newer version since due to it being the same type of BCD store in each of the newer versions to follow. The command you type in while at the command prompt option while booted live from the 10 media is simple! "bootrec /rebuildbcd" equals boot repair /rebuild bcd store
