Some settings are managed by your organisation.

    Hi there

When I open Privacy options and go to the general tab at the top in red I see

'Some settings are managed by your organisation.'

I do not belong to an organisation and its only on a home network and is a copy of Windows 10 home, any ideas what it could mean?

Some registry and group policy changes will give you this message and prevent some setting changes through the settings menu.

If you are the administrator, you can simply ignore and continue, like on the below page

Hi, no solution, I'm afraid; I had this happen yesterday, and it stopped me using Cortana- Cortana offered a message similar to the one you posted. I also found- amongst others- that Privacy, Feedback & Diagnostics, Diagnostic & Usage data was greyed out. You could check these.

Exactly what is disabled on your system may well depend on what setting has been changed.

I had a look around and found the same message reported numerous times, by a lot of puzzled people. One or two suggestions or thoughts here and there as you may have seen.

Rather than waste more time I took the coward's way out, and tried System Restore. Oh- no- failed to complete for unknown reason - some file couldn't be accessed. Ok, sledgehammer- I restored a disk image and then redid things from there.

So far one rumour does not seem to be true.. some reports suspected a Windows update. And bear in mind, some reported this with pre-RTM preview builds.

I just remembered: some have resolved this by doing this:
"Settings" -> "Privacy" -> "Feedback & diagnostics" -> "Diagnostics and usage data" - set to "Basic".
Change it to "Enhanced" or higher.

(I couldn't do this, 'cos that button was greyed out, so as I said, I couldn't resolve it!)

I found about this useful little app from a post on this forum, it lets you change privacy settings etc.,

OO ShutUp10: download free antispy tool for Windows 10

    It may help you.

Hi graystreet, I used exactly that between a point when I didn't have the problem and when I did. I'm just wondering if using that actually caused the problem, as it attempts to disable some features.

But I would be surprised if so; I assume it was tested, unless some combination of settings gives rise to the problem. I also changed some settings manually, so I've no idea which led to the 'company policy' restrictions. I did not do anything with the Group Policy editor, only the settings GUI.

What I can say is that this time, having restored the image, and NEITHER used O&O shutup nor fiddled with privacy settings, I haven't encountered the 'Some settings are managed by your organisation.' message, nor Cortana complaining about being restricted by company policy.

Hmm not sure, there is an option to return everything to "factory defaults" in the app. I just fiddled around with it and I could get Cortana to give the "Cortana is disabled by Company Policy" message, I then used the app to set everything back to default and the message went away and Cortana worked again, not that I particularly want it to

Ah, I see...now I understand why you mention it. A very good thing to know! Could offer a good many people puzzled people a way forward, as this problem is reported in a number of places. I haven't come across such an option in 'Settings' - I would hope there was.

I have the red message problem too. I think it happened after I used one of these W10 stop-spying programs, too. I set my W10 to ask me before getting updates but this also asks me before every Windows Defender anti-virus update, which is one or two times a day and is so annoying. Anti-virus updates should always be automatic.
