Opening photos etc in double click

Hello, my photos, JPEGs etc have stopped automatically opening with double click.

I now have to double click, then click the "photo" icon at the bottom of the taskbar, which flashes

    What have I done ?

Hi, a guess - does this apply?
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...f-8ddb6e7f0ae4

    Otherwise:
History please: (so often not given by posters)
    - what changed before this started?

One simple thing you might try is to use a recent System Restore point.
Check what doing so will change by using its Scan button.

its windows version 22h2, windows 10 home.

A few weeks ago, I was playing a game, old Doom, and i my screen flipped, i used CTL - ALT - ARROW UP to restore, but haven't had a problem again until now.

    And i uninstalled the game.

I tried to follow those directions above, but not sure if i was doing it right.

    Thank you for your reply.

=> which directions? Do you mean use System Restore?

I now have to double click, then click the "photo" icon at the bottom of the taskbar,
Guessing, the program window is 'displayed' off the screen -> you can't see it.

Try this: after you've double clicked a photo, then click the task view icon (usually to the right of the start button) - can you see an image representing the window of whatever program is associated with your image files?

    (Which program is that?)

sorry for not giving all the info Dalchina.

The instructions i tried weren't fixing it. I've did what you have just said, and yes that seems to be working , along with the icon still showing in the taskbar, which disappears once the photo is opened correctly.

I have photos stored in my Docs/JPEGs and also other self made sub folders such as location photos (all filed and saved in MY Docs)

Some appear properly on double click, some don't.

Hmm, I can see this is going to be really hard.

I think the only approach for you that may make some progress is to try just one thing at a time, very precisely.

That means this is could take much longer.

    Let's look at System Restore.

    1. Press Win key and r together.
    2. In the box, type
    rstrui.exe
    3. Post a screenshot of what you see. Should be like this:
Opening photos etc in double click-1.jpg

You should post a screenshot like this:
Opening photos etc in double click-screenshot.png
(Tutorial available if needed - click Tutorials at the top and use the search box if you don't know how to create a screenshot).
    Do not use imgur please.

Is there a restore point that was created before this started? (You can click 'Show More').

maybe I'm wrong, but it seems files are slightly delayed too, potential cause of this problem ?. I've scanned used windows defender. MWB free and AWB cleaner, with nothing found.

Hmm, 27/10/24.. not too far back... well, you can select that one, then click 'Scan for affected...' and see what would change if you used that restore point.. assuming 27/10/24 is before this started.

Make a note, capture a screenshot of that..

If very little- then try using the restore point and see if the problem has gone.

    its a wired, Dell mouse.

I slowed it down, and its a bit better, I think, but I;ll try the restore point.

For info.... i have never did a restore point, what exactly does it do ? Does it undo windows updates ?
