As I said, once again, try the scan and it will SHOW you what will change if you use the restore point.

What these neither protect nor change are your personal data files.

I've just noticed that if I go to apps and features, the photo app is greyed out. I had tried to repair it.

    Edit

i looked as you said, and it lists a huge list of things.

I wonder why you have so many listed?

Please run the scan again and post a screenshot here. There may be a clue as to what changed. The more info you provide the better help you may get.

Now, taking another view... if you presently have the MS Photos app associated with image files and you can't open them in the usual way, one easy thing to try is to associate a DIFFERENT program with e.g. jpg files, or choose a different defaut program in Settings.

Then see if double click works.

    Turning to your Photos app:
if I go to apps and features, the photo app is greyed out. I had tried to repair it.
Please post a screenshot. There may be 2 possible places you're referring to.

Does the Photos app launch properly from the Start Menu?

    If not:

Turning to your Photos app. From the searchable Tutorials section see
Reinstall and Re-register Apps in Windows 10

    - use the instruction for the Photo app. Be careful you follow the instructions at the top of the section EXACTLY.

As you have found one strange thing. time to do the usual basic checks.
    So, once again...
    a. Check your disks (Crystal Diskinfo - free) - simply launch and look.
    b. If ok, then from an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    c. If ok, then likewise run
    SFC /SCANNOW
    and check it passes.

If it helps, randomly and sparsely (with no apparent rule as for when/when not, and little frequently), I used to get that behaviour (that I'll call the "taskbar flashing app protocol": instead of launching directly in a new window as any new app, it goes to the taskbar and the icon flashes) when running anything (maybe there's a rule that I haven't managed to catch), specially things that require an UAC prompt but not way all of them, randomly and sparsely instead. I have 4 computers with Windows 7, 10 and 11, I think I've got this behaviour some few times in every (I insist, randomly and sparsely in my case).

I use the past because I don't recall having it recently, maybe like 2-3 months.

Idk if this behaviour (the "taskbar flashing app protocol") is expected behaviour in some situations (like -fictional- "the new windows manager is busy or overflowed and it does it to not lose the app run or to avoid doing half-app runs", or -fictional again- for security reasons), or if it's a bug.

    ------------------------------------------

I've researched this a bit launched app goes to taskbar as flashing icon - Google Search .

My best finding is likely this Windows 10 Taskbar program flashing but not opening when called - Super User , Windows 10, the OP's trying to open another file from Explorer for an already open app and gets the flashing instead. From the replies it seems to be expected behaviour in this case. I'd suggest seeing if Photos is already open somehow, maybe with a never closed pic?

More theoretical or for specialists c# - application causing orange flashing in taskbar - Stack Overflow . The OP says: "I think we will end up advising to set registry key HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\ForegroundLockTimout = 0. It is not ideal, but it seems to be the only thing to fix the problem." Imo, don't do this w/o at least researching about that key. Also, this is a 2011 thread about Windows 7.

This thread https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/c...ng_on_taskbar/ is about Windows 11 and a complicated maneuver that I don't understand well. The OP is suggested "It is possible to turn the app flashing up all up (it's an option in taskbar settings), but not specifically on startup to my knowledge" (I've gone to my taskbar settings in my W10 and I haven't seen anything that could be this cryptic option to my understanding, maybe it's for just W11) and the OP replies "Thank you so much, this fixed it. After booting up my pc today all those pre-opened tabs no longer flaunting me to click on them."

Thanks for showing the list... or at least part of it. It looks like it continues (the slider to the right?)

You'd need to look further down too.

Now if most of those are routine updates (there seeem to be many) they would just be redone after you've used System Restore- easy peasy.

What may be interesting is, if you look at the rest of the list, to see if you can see anything that might be related to the change of behaviour. That's why I wanted to see the list.

    Compare mine from 4/11:
Opening photos etc in double click-1.jpg

In your list of apps I don't see anything greyed out.

i tried to copy and paste the entire list, but it won't highlight.

Is there any other way i can show you the entire list of system restore files , if you need to see it ?

As I said , i have never done this before, so i have no idea what normal is ... it just seems a rather big list !!

this is what it is doing, flashing but not opening unless i click on the taskbar icon again. And its not happening all the time, about 50/50

There is no programmatic way to show the list other than that.
The only way would be a series of screenshots.

As you say, having a very large list is unusual - there are some background updates that happen routinely e.g. browsers, Store apps- some 3rd party programs, if you let them, will update.

In the period you are considering I wouldn't expect there to have been more than perhaps one Windows Update if you have preview updates enabled, for example.

Driver updates shouldn't be that common.

Maybe the fact you've had so many is indicative of a deeper problem.

That's why I asked you to carry out some routine checks, which I don't think you have.

I also suggested you try changing the default program from Photos. I don't think you have.

I also asked if Photos opened normally if you launched it e.g. from the Start Menu.
