How to search for text in images?

    Hi,

I have many screenshot images that has text inside the images in Windows 10 Pro folders, how to search for the image that contains the text keyword that I am searching for? (for example, the image is a screenshot of chocolate cake recipe I saw in a web page)

For example, I have a folder [Recipes] that contains other folders [Pizza Recipe], [Cake Recipe], [Cookie Recipe] that contains screenshot of images with text, now I want to search for the image that has the text "chocolate" inside the image, I want a list of results of all images that contains the text "chocolate" inside the image.

    Thanks

You will have to set a tag on each image and then search by searching for the tag.

Example set red on the tag and then search with tag: red will bring up all photo that are red, or you could also just search red but that would also populate the query with anything that is red not just tagged red. Like if there is any image called red those would come up too.

I have no idea whether this is any good, I haven't tried it. But on the face of it this 3rd party app from the Store would appear to do what you want.

    Description

The App has a OCR- filter that can pull text from any image and search for text in images on the local devices. This allows you to search for words and bring up all results as image where that phrase appears.

It runs only on the local device and protects your privacy.

    Some important things to consider:
    1. OCR is not 100% accurate, and much depends on the quality of the image, including colour contrast, dpi etc.
    2. If you have a LOT of images, searhing will be slow if for each search each individual image has to be OCR'd.

Therefore you may need to consider a solution that creates an index. I.e. each image is OCR'd once.

Evernote (free I believe) says it does this:

You may have noted there are quite a few discussions on this topic.

Many years ago Google Desktop Search had an add-on that did this quite well.

Copernic desktop search does this, but only in its Elite version - it's very far from cheap.

i agree OCR detection needs to be done on images that are pretty clear. If the image is skewed at all or the print is not very clear it will be omitted from the resulting outcome. You should try it to see if it works on your images.

if not Tags are a 100% concise method, You set the tag and every time you search that tag it will put the image you want. Want chocolate cake then you set that tag and the chocolate cake will return in the results.
You can also set multiple tags on any image so you could think of a whole range of terms you might need to search and then add those to the images.

I have ABBYY FineReader Pro 5.0. It is an OCR program that I bought 25 years ago. It saves to a Word .doc file. It works OK but I usually have to edit the results and correct any errors.

Here is a screenshot I took of Post #1. I loaded it into FineReader and saved as a .doc file. I then used Word to save it as a .docx file. This file is attached. Note I did no edits of the contents so it has some errors.

If you upload an image to your Google Drive then open it in Google Docs then it will apply OCR to recognise any text.
