    Unacceptable authoritarian arrogance

    Unacceptable authoritarian arrogance

Over the weekend I had a panic call from a client, a photographer who stores his images on a dedicated drive E:.
The name of the master folder on his system being "camera image dump". He has therein several sub-folders which bear the camera/model names. Anything from a camera he downloads to the appropriate folder. It is his way too transfer and sort preliminary images and know where they are. He has of course automated daily backups.

After another Windows update had been shoved down into his computer over the weekend he couldn't find thereafter his master folder and subsequently all folders therein. He panicked and called me. Not knowing what the situation was I told him to not touch anything. I'll be over come Monday.

Well, it turns out that in the usual infinite top-down authoritarian arrogance the Windows update reconfigured folder names to their preferred liking "pictures" as the folder as all subsequent folders are set and optimized to show pictures in explorer.

So I renamed his master folder back to its original name replaced the default icon with the user specific chosen one.
He was happy all was well but he was still a little upset how this happened without his knowledge.

My question now is how can I in the future prevent this audacious arrogance that Windows updates just rename everything the way they see fit and to their liking without giving a fly turd about what the user wants and needs or has configured!?

In other words, to prevent in the future of the [re]parsing of folder names to default window settings and names without the user input, knowledge or acknowledgment.

Since we only License the use of the software [per the license agreement everyone reads during install of Windows???] it has to be recognized that Version Upgrades and Build updates to those will change things, puts defaults back in place as designed.

No, not about that! I'd like to find out how you can prevent this in the future. This guy's weekend was totally ruined and I can understand his panic having had similar encounters over the years where I stared at the screen where's my folder!?
Just like you would like it if after your vehicle is being serviced everything is reset and rearranged plus he only allowed to drive certain roads to certain destinations at certain times....

One problematic thing about computers is that changes occur too often silent and settled without any form of warning or notification until one day you look for something and it's not there and you have no effing clue what happened!

Well well, sounds like you like authoritarian approaches to tell you what to do and how, when you can do it...

I hope for you that one day AI will not tell you what you can eat, when you can eat and how much exercise you need to do to justify what you eat other else your health benefits will be cut....

What I find far more scary and disturbing is you're blanket acceptance and justification without questioning anything. Looking into the history books we can learn to what this can lead...

Lastly can you answer the question how this can be prevented? That was the reason for my post in first place! I hope you don't just going to silently "weasel out the back door" but instead provide a working constructive solution!

Relax... it wasn't a criticism. It was just a mere observation.

Just a shame that this website doesn't have a 'Rant' forum for you and others to indulge yourselves..

The way to prevent this in the future is to have him store his pics on a storage drive.
The Windows Libraries, of which Pictures is just one folder, are pretty much under Microsoft's control.

    The storage drives are not.

In my case, I just used the tutorial to remove all the MS folders under This PC and create my own folders on a separate storage drive.

Add or Remove Folders from This PC in Windows 10

Currently, my drives are set up like this...

I use Karen's Replicator (free), to backup Disk 1 to Disk 2. I use Macrium reflect for my Windows backups.
Karen's Replicator can be run manually or on a schedule.

Any of these will work for general Windows backups...

    You can try:

"Can I disable automatic folder type discovery and keep special folder types, such as Pictures?"

By not using the C:\Users\%UserName%\Pictures folder whether relocated [and renamed] or not.
Create your own folders & use them instead.
