(and click the magnifying glass button).

Searching for ods should also work.

Try not searching, list look down the list.

My LibreOffice Calc [spreadsheet] shows .ods as the default format when choosing Save as in the File menu.

I think the problem all along is that the app is oriented to an antique version of OpenOffice, so it just didn't have the modern spreadsheet info anywhere. What I eventually did was to (1) open an OO spreadsheet .ods file manually and put it on my desktop. (2) Then I selected the antique file format from the app's list of options and tried to put that on the 'new' list. (3) When it asked for a template, I referred it to the .ods template on my desktop. (4) Now I can open an OO spreadsheet, using the antique extension, that looks semi-useful. At this point, I'm ready to move on. Thanks for your effort to assist!

As far as I know it simply picks up the defined file types. It has no 'knowledge' in and of itself of any particular file type.

I have a current version of Libre Office. I have no idea why you can't see that particular one from Open Office.
You can create the New entry manually if you wish.

Somewhere on tenforums I've documented doing that.
