I've never used any software bundled on a disk/USB/SD.
That bundled software is running whilst connected to an Android???? Or perhaps I've misunderstood your post?

Yes. Sandisk has a client app for the phone as well as an app for the computer. No security features at all unlike some other Sandisk flash drives that come with encryption software.

Speaking of which, I did several backups from phone to flash drive yesterday using Samsung SmartSwitch. None of the files were encrypted. I was able to access them with two other phones and my PC. I looked through settings and didn't see an option to turn encryption on or off, but I do remember seeing a message saying that I would need to be logged on to my Samsung account in order to access the files.

I didn't capture it in a screenshot but I think that message said that I'd need to log in to my Samsung Account before backing up in order to encrypt the backup.
It was after my Step 7.

Yeah... So, not sure what the deal is but SmartSwitch is not encrypting anything. I went into settings and switched on "Enhance transfer security" and changed "External storage encryption" from "Samsung account" to "password", which prompted me to create one.

I rebooted the phone and did another backup. Once again, removed the flash drive and connected it to another phone and then to my PC. The newly backed-up files were not encrypted and fully accessible.

I'm going to try formatting the drive with the phone and see if that makes a difference.

No change. Files are still accessible with PC despite SmartSwitch prompting me to create a password prior to making the backup.

I could not find any guidance on their support website either.
e.g. What is Smart Switch and how do I use it? | Samsung UK
