    Start Menu timeout

A recent update to Win10 has apparently changed the behavior of the Start Menu. Background: I love the Live Tiles in Win8 & 10, and I have several programs whose only real purpose is to use tiles to dynamically display info. Because of this, when I'm not using my Win10 machines, I leave the Start Menu on screen - sort of like a screen saver - to keep an eye on the info these provide. However, for the past few days, I noticed that I would leave the menu up at night, but it'd be gone the next morning. I thought I was going crazy until I sat in front of the computer without touching it. Turns out, exactly ten minutes after the last touch, the menu goes away without anyone telling it to. This is apparently a new feature (or IMO, MISfeature) added with the latest updates.

I know that few people care about Live Tiles anymore (or ever did), but if someone knows or figures out how this timeout is implemented and how to disable it, I would appreciate knowing.

What are these Several Programs? Is there a setting with in these programs that has a timeout?

Your questions tell me that you didn't understand my issue, so I'll try to explain in more detail.

This is really irrelevant to the issue, but to give one example, the main function of Asparion Clock is to put a Live Tile in the Start Menu showing a clock face that updates every minute - optionally with a second Live Tile that shows a calendar for the current month.

The issue is not with "these programs", but rather with Windows itself, and how (or rather, when) it decides to take down the display of the Start Menu. It used to be that you could press the Windows key to display the menu, walk away from the computer, come back hours later, and still see the Start Menu on screen. Now it disappears after ten minutes regardless, and I'm looking for a way to stop Windows from making it disappear.

Also, for the record, about the computer in question:
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3337U CPU @ 1.80GHz 1.80 GHz
Installed RAM 4.00 GB (3.88 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
    Edition Windows 10 Home
    Version 22H2
    OS build 19045.4291
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19056.1000.0

I leave computers on at night and the things affected are by Power Options, Sleep and Hibernation settings.

The computer in question is configured to never sleep or hibernate; besides, that's not what it's doing - it's still on, only the desktop is showing instead of the Start Menu that was visible on top of the desktop when I left it.

A Task scheduler task that temporarily steals focus would have the effect you describe.

After 12 mins with the Start Menu displayed, my laptop screen blanked- I moved the mouse- the Start Menu was still displayed.

As Try3 suggests, something else is doing this.

Try a clean boot/disable startups/ use Autoruns if necessary - also shows scheduled tasks.

Guess you'll feel deprived with Win 11- no live tiles to keep you amused at night..
(Is that what they call 'a night on the tiles'?)

Okay, first, I see that Scheduled Tasks have an option to be scheduled "On idle", but is there a way to identify which of the dozens of standard task(s) use this option - other than reviewing each one individually?

Second, the better option would be to schedule my own "On idle" task to trigger, say, thirteen minutes after idling, but how do I create an action that (re)opens the Start Menu?

I thought you wanted to find out what is causing the Start Menu to be closed.

That requires progressive elimination until it doesn't happen, as I suggested.

One other approach you might take in respect of scheduled tasks is to
    a. note the time the SM closed.
    b. look for a task run at that time.

    You could use this:

Another thought might be it's something you have displayed on the Start Menu itself- some live tile update perhaps?

I don't really care what's causing it, as long as I can undo it shortly afterward using a similar mechanism.

I'll try this, just for the info, next time I can afford to sit idly by the computer for ten minutes.
