next time I can afford to sit idly by the computer for ten minutes
    - I went and did something else while waiting for 12 minutes for you.

I know that few people care about Live Tiles anymore (or ever did), but if someone knows or figures out how this timeout is implemented and how to disable it
That's a change from your original question.

You'd need a small script running which you'd have to cancel

    which would do something like
'If start menu not running, start it" I suppose.

You should find out what's doing it. Good luck.

Yes, you're right; I apologize for that.

I was thinking more like "If enough idle time has passed for StartEnder.exe to have run, run StartReStarter.cmd".

The risk with that is that unless you disabled it or had it not running at specific times or maybe disabled by you using the PC you'd have the SM popping up when you didn't want it- ie. would have to be bit 'clever'.

As no one else seems to have the issue you report, seems likely to be sthg specific to your configuration.

I think you'll have to sit by your computer watching so you can
    - note down the time the Start menu disappeared, then
    - Run Task scheduler and, on its initial screen, look through entries in the Task status section to see if anything ran at the time the change happened.

My post #9 offers a good way to do that.

    I agree with dalchina.
Given that you'll have to sit by the computer watching for the change to take place, that NirSoft Task Scheduler Viewer utility can show the tasks in chronological order so that would be quicker than looking through the Task scheduler, Task status records.

Well, I now have more information, but still no clear path to a resolution.

The offending task is apparently called "ReconcileFeatures", and it's filed in the Task Scheduler under "\Microsoft\Windows\Flighting\FeatureConfig" - but it uses "Custom Trigger"s which can't be viewed or edited. Also, there are other tasks in this folder that were created around the same time, and which got run shortly before this one kicked in. Those also have uneditable triggers, so it's possible that one of these is what causes "ReconcileFeatures" to be run.

    Thanks.
    To check:
Verify that this task runs every 10 mins.

Simply look at what e.g. Task scheduler reports for that task every 10 minutes and see if it has been run...

From TaskSchedulerView that task is shown:

Whilst it can be run manually, doing so (clicking) would close the Start Menu, so to test that that is doing that would require something clever.

In the above it appears to have been run when I logged on this morning. There is no obvious 'Next Run' scheduled.
If this task is responsible for the Start Menu closing, the question then is what caused it to run.. Clearly it doesn't run every 10 mins on mine. Does it on yours?

I never said every ten minutes; it's only after ten minutes with zero input from the mouse or keyboard, and my latest digging bears that out. Now I have to find or write some sort of script that will activate the Start Menu, and schedule it to run after, say, eleven minutes of inactivity.

And thank you for your clarification.

Then note that it does not run repeatedly on mine.

There will be some cause specific to your PC.

I suggest you simply don't bother about the SM disappearing. Good luck.
