So you had not deleted their file extensions after all.

File Explorer has columns called 'Name', 'Type' etc
Under NAMES it shows my truncated entries.
    Under TYPE it shows 'Shortcut'.
    My system is x32Win10ProV22H2

    As I wrote to Dennis
under NAMES File Explorer lists my truncated entries

As I said, you had not done what you thought you had done.
The file extensions had not been deleted.
Hiding the file extensions [see Les' diagram] is not deleting them.

'I don't know why MS set Explorer to hide extensions by default.' It did NOT. I was the one that deleted the extensions.

I saw your correct suggestion after I had tried and succeeded with Ben Myer's

    Hide does not equal delete.

I did NOT change the setting for 'hide' - in any case 'hiding' applies to the entire entry, not just the extension.

I DID manually truncate all those entries by DELETING the extension.

A DEFAULT install of WIndows, for several versions, has the file extensions hidden, they can be shown by a change in File Explorer's Options on the toolbar. I show them as I'm old school, first computer in '92 with MS-DOS 5 and Windows 3.1. The downside of not showing extensions is one can see or apparently have 2 or more files of the exact name but not be aware they are different types, e.g. can have mytestfile.txt and mytestfile.exe. Can't have 2 or more files of the exact same name in a folder, one has to be slightly different, so seeing 2 names is a automatic clue that the 2 files are different. Showing the extension is extremely helpful in file management. Clicking a heading of any column in File Explorer can rearrange the listing, ascending or descending, good for getting things in groups.

MY MISTAKE to say that the entries and not the extensions are hidden.

However - I did NOT change the 'hide' settings, and I DID delete the extensions.
In Folder Options; View tab 'Show hidden files, folders and drives' is selected - and has been for years.

Berton - I'm with you 100%, and was also a Windows 3.1 user.

And since you mention DOS - my favourite Word processor is STILL Word Perfect for Dos v5.1+,
but I do use WORD where it has a desirable feature that Word Perfect lacks - that does not happen often.

    No, you did not.
I am trying to help you understand what you did & did not do.

    The command
    Code:
    C:\folder\folder name\*.lnk
only deleted files that had the file extension .lnk and no other files.
And you said that command worked.
    Sebastian42 said:
    del C:\folder\folder name\*.lnk

Therefore, you had not deleted the file extensions.

    And you said
    Sebastian42 said:
In File Explorer they shows under File Types as SHORTCUTS
which also demonstrates that you had not deleted the file extensions.
