    Xes on icons

I'm rearranging my files and icons, and Explorer is suddenly very very slow. I also note that some of my icons have little red Xes on them and some have grey Xes.

what do the Xes mean?Have they anything to do with the slowness? How can I sped things up?

Do a right-click on the main window, and select Refresh.

You need to provide a screenshot. Various utilities add such icon overlays, from Onedrive to Norton, disk-related utilities to sync tools.

    Slowness?
    a. Check your disk(s). Which PC is this? Details help.
    E.g. Crystal Diskinfo

    if ok, then run
    chkdsk X: /scan
from an admin prompt, where X is the partition or disk letter you are checking.

Result on screen- scroll to bottom to see if it passes.

How much free space on C: ?

In what way in particular is explorer slow?
Is it only when viewing certain folders e.g. many multimedia files?
Is it slow when viewing folders on all your disks?
    When rt clicking?
    Examples?

By way of a random guess, try
How to Reset and Clear Quick Access Pinned Folders in Windows 10
Clear and Reset Thumbnail Cache in Windows 10

    Win 10 22H2
    isn't your full build number. E.g. 19045.4170.
    Details help. Thanks.

Do you have ancient shortcuts whose target doesn't exist anymore? Does it exist but Explorer doesn't seem able to see it? Are the icons pics correct despite the X's?
