That seems logical. It should be possible to test by using Windows+R to bring up the Run dialog then enter Taskmgr.exe to see if it pops up the blue box in question.
No. It just pops up the "task Manager".
I will try the repair install and see what happens.
    Thanks,

I don't think my problem is the same thing but thank you for your input.

The Repair install did not work. I just kept getting taken in a loop.

So, I have long been a user of Macrium Reflect. What a wonderful program for those of us who don't have the time to try to figure out the thinking of Microsoft's gurus. Enter Reflect. I make nightly "images" of my operating system and, when I have a problem, I just go back to the last Reflect that was working correctly. Problem solved.
I was hoping that I would not have to go back through the multiple Reflects that I have made in the last month or two to find one that does not have the problem with the login. Took me four hours of trial and error but I got one that works and has a lot of my programs installed. I took note of all the programs that I installed on the next one that did not work and I will be comparing the two lists to see if there is one program that caused my auto login problem.
I'll post it if I come up with something or if MS does an update overnight and destroys my computer again.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help. It kinda looks like I have this problem all to myself.
    Regards,
    Ed

Has anyone else noticed that at the very bottom of the screenshot in post #1 on what appears to be the taskbar there is a lable. This seems to be a phone number with a Beaver Dam, WI area code. Is there something in the start-up apps that's trying (and failing) to dial out?

@deepsix Have a look in Task Manager for any suspicious looking Start-up Apps.

Which would probably have shown up in the .ARN file provided by the OP.

Oh wait... there was no response.

    Unsubscribed.

    Ed,

Like some of the others, I've been re-reading this thread.

I used "Control Userpasswords2" to auto-login and I did the "fix" to make it work again after MS tried to stop it from working.
In the bit of your OP that I've quoted, I'd like to understand more about:-
    - "MS tried to stop it from working" - What happened? My auto-logins were set when I first set up each computer and have lasted ever since.
    - "the "fix" " - Do you mean that you unset the auto-login in NetPlWiz, rebooted, re-did the auto login?

This is just on this fresh install
    What tweaks have you applied?

... while I hope for someone that has experienced and solved the same thing.
I haven't seen a report like yours before.

    All the best,
    Denis
