[QUOTE=Steve C;2613240If I can't upgrade I'll still use the laptop on Windows 10 for non secure stuff but won't use for sensitive stuff like online banking.[/QUOTE]

I don't have the luxury of separate laptops for "most" stuff and "sensitive" stuff. I usually replace my laptops on a 4-5-6 year cycle. Same with desktop motherboard upgrades. I'm guessing that a lot of the guys on the forum are like me.

My desktop life cycle is 10 years by building a high spec PC in the first place. Oldest laptop is 10 years old and works fine.

I do not want to throw my laptop with Windows 10 after that date. I do not want to leave it online as well. It's working perfectly and almost never caused me headaches. Your thoughts...
Do what I am going to do.

Consider joining the upcoming Win 10 ESU program (will be available to consumers this time) and rock on.

We should be good to go to Oct of 2028.

The truth is that I have never used Windows 10 with a local account and don't really know the advantages of it.
One advantage that I love about a local account is that you will never need to deal with CoPilot or any of the annoying (and most likely privacy ruining) AI stuff.

    Nope, I hoard laptops

Have you seen 'My Computers' below? System One is the youngest, and that's from 2011.

I have machines dating from 2009 up to late 2021 (the newer ones are supported devices for W11 and are in my specs over on Eleven Forum). With a workaround or two I can get the older unsupported ones to install and run Windows 11. I've even had the Insider Canary Build of Windows 11 24H2 running on this old System One Toshiba laptop of mine.

    Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware | Page 96 | Windows 11 Forum - post #1,917

There's no need to upgrade. You can run Windows 10 as long as you wish.
We even have a Windows 7 desktop here. It, too, runs fine.

Glad to learn about this program. Any idea of the cost per year? Can I get just one license for all 4 of my Win 10 machines? (I auew hope so.) Ditto for VMs and additional installs of Windows 10 in "scratch" partitions on my desktop machine.

Or I may just upgrade to Win 12 when it comes out. I'm just guessing (without any evidence whatsoever) that Win 12 will be "foundational" the way Win 10 was for Win 11.

As far as I can make out, such details have not yet been announced.

ESUs will only last for three years anyway so they are not a permanent solution.

Personally, I'm not going to consider the subject any further until until definite information is posted in the TenForums News section.
I've only got one current computer that can't be updated to Windows 11 at all.

You cloud sign up of the ESUP (Extend Security Updates Program - for END of Life operating systems)
No clue how pricey this would be but if it is for individuals I suspect it won't be THAT pricey.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/wi...curity-updates

You could also look into : Welcome to the era of vulnerability micro patching - 0patch
--they do security updates for Windows that MS does not support anymore and are probably the reason MS came up with the ESU to begin with.

OR you can do what I will do.

Nothing - keep using Windows 10 as usual.
I have a ton of protection at the firewall and OS level so I am not worried.

I will probably upgrade to Windows 12 but I am skipping Windows 11 - it's a Windows Millennium/Vista/8.0 cycle rat and I do not want it.

Windows 12 should be more stable with more features.
    We shall see.
