    backwards compatibity

Version number and computer specs are not necessary for this question.
My daily use Windows 10 machine which is experiencing hardware issues. The price of repair is not economically feasible. I do not wish to use apps from any app store for certain legacy programs which I use on a regular basis. Therefore, I am wondering whether or not a replacement computer with Windows 11 can be downgraded to Windows 10 without compatibility issues.
Before you ask, I have a Windows 11 machine which is a single purpose computer. I am willing to perform a clean install to accomplish this.
Thanks in advance for any helpful replies.

    Regards,

    Hello caffeine,

It all depends on if the computer manufacturer has W10 drivers available for it or only support for W11 drivers.

Windows Update may provide most or generic drivers to use with W10, but no guarantee.

You could of course consider a second hand machine already running Win 10.... for some reason as Oct 2025 approaches I have the strangest feeling there may be a glut of those...

Running Win 10 in a VM under Win 11 wouldn't be so desirable of course.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

    Brink,
Please clarify. Do you mean the manufacturer only? If so, the manufacturer has built Windows 10 machines which, to my understanding, means this is not a problem. --or-- Do you mean the specific computer I purchase? If so, I have no clue how to determine this.

    dalchina,
You nailed it. I want a new computer (nothing fancy) which boots into Windows 10. I am very familiar with VMs, but that does not fit my desires. I am not interested in a used computer as a function of trouble free long life.

Driver support will apply for your specific model.

    Thanks for the reply.
I suppose the manufacturer's web site is the source. I will go shopping, return home to research driver support, and make a decision. I won't be able to research at the store because of an injury which has left me unable to reliably use a touch screen.

If you can find precedent for your chosen PC running Win 10 that would give confidence too. At this point there should be a reasonable number listing drivers for both Win 10 and 11... that will most likely diminish, although plenty of organisations can be expected to continue running Win 10 for some time, especially as MS is going to offer extended support post Oct 25 on a fee-paying basis.

Okay lets do this $@#$ whatever..... sigh

A.Lets say you do not want to take any chances that your machine is unable to install the correct drivers.

    1. Go to Device manager and look up the computer information. In fact the things you need to look up first is the following.
    A. Computer make, model number, etc. You need the drivers,
    1. GPU
    2. Board
    3. NAT / Wireless etc
    4. Display ( Optional )

    2. You can literally ( I mean literally checkout each installed device and find it's adjacent file and installation file ( INF ).
Make a copy of those files to a location like a USB or Folder on the C drive ( top level ) or zip folder ( I prefer 7z and Winrar compression ), and literally move all those files and folders to another install to the matching folders and when it goes looking
for those drivers it will install them. Only thing preventing them from installing if the driver manufacturer puts a block on the driver ( the Manufacturer is scum or is working with Microsoft ).

    3. Otherwise ( as a programmer ) you could edit the driver to work on Windows 10 ( because there is literally barely any difference between 7-11 at this point ). Because you went to school for this and actually should be able to read code and edit
a stupid line that prevents you from using the driver. Beyond this method you might have to disable the driver enforcement
agent ( or whatever ungodly force that prevents me from using home-made/DIY drivers or even newer drivers. ).

    B. You want to install Windows 10 without the store their are Ameliorated editions flying around the place. I am using one of this
HP computer with less then 20gig ( trying to get it down to 10 gig ) and 4gig of Ram. However depending on what your need is the program ( not the install ) might not work. Despite using such small installation space I am starting to see the Unhappy-smile-face. loading my Workstation install into this HP all-in-one machine also produces the Unhappy-Smile-face.

However your not trying to use an outdated machine meant for windows 7 that you found outside some neighborhood-wife house. No your using dedicated machine with high-end parts. So again with Ameliorated you get the following.

No WIndows Store ( which means no app is able to run or install correctly through normal means.
Open-Shell = Startisback for free which you can edit the start-menu the legal way
Scoop pre-installed = so you can scoop install whatever, same with wget and other CMD linstallation methods.

AnyDesktop, Open Office, Libre Office are all up to date ideal methods of doing your daily wordprossing
GIMP = Photoshop on the most basic photo editing needs.

    .................

About linux subsystem. You need a special part in order to run GUI programs ( programs that uses your GPU and bitmap ) .
You do not need Microsoft Store products to do this at all.

Same with Android sub system. YOu might get Amazon store but you do not need Amazon store but you will have to manually
install and use ADB commands, before you can setup

    ................

Windows 11 and Windows 10 should be able to use the same drivers, Otherwise I do not understand what would be the problem with your 10 machine, Them not using the same drivers is insanity.

    Daymin,
Thanks for your reply. It contains much information which I will give a closer look.

You said: "Otherwise ( as a programmer ) you could edit the driver to work on Windows 10 ( because there is literally barely any difference between 7-11 at this point ). Because you went to school for this and actually should be able to read code and edit"

However, I have not gone to school for any of this. I am self taught and know no programming. This should not present a problem in accomplishing my goal. I am always curious and learn from all that I do. Furthermore, I do not quit until I win or reach an impasse which requires overcoming too many empty holes in my knowledge base (read as weeks or longer of study and research to get up to speed).

    regards,
    caffeine

I have "downgraded" a Dell XPS laptop (that shipped with Windows 11) and my son's custom built gaming desktop (that was initially set up with Windows 11) to Windows 10. No problems. YMMV.
