    Modern Standby and Wake-Up Computer

2 Threads I've read ref the reality that Modern Standby Prevents -- computer Wake-up by Task Scheduler -- so that (ie) you can Run a Scheduled Scan or Image creation. HP reportedly Prevents Disabling Mod Stby, while Dell is reported to be a Maybe.
IS THERE any known way to Disable Modern Standby in Win 11 Pro ?

    Hello Craig,

You can test to see if the method in the tutorial below may work for you.

If you are going to try disabling S0 Modern standby, make a new system image & check that your imaging utility's boot disk works before you start.
I have experimented a lot with this.
It has only gone seriously wrong in one instance but if I had not had the ability to boot into my imaging utility & restore the system image I would never have been able to recover from the hideous results of disabling S0 modern standby on that particular computer.
See also Disabling S0 Modern standby - range of experiences - my post #8 - ElevenForum
Since the scripting & power tests I ran [see links below], I keep S0 Modern standby enabled on my two S0 Modern standby computers and everything is hunky dory. Taming S0 Modern standby has been a complete success. One of these is a Win10 computer & the other is Win11.

    See my post
Running scripts during S0 Modern standby - my post #86 - ElevenForum
for guidance on how to use Task scheduler during S0 Modern standby.
Since learning what I did from those tests, I have been able to use Task scheduler to run tasks during S0 Modern standby including using scripts to exit that condition and resume normal running.
Since running those tests, I have altered all my Task scheduler tasks so they can work with S0 Modern standby. Each batch script now starts with
    Code:
    :: Rouse the monitor
    Set VBSScript="%TEMP%\%RANDOM%-RouseMonitor.vbs"
    Echo Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") > %VBSScript%
    Echo WshShell.SendKeys "{F14}">> %VBSScript%
    Call %VBSScript%
Example WakeTest - posted version.bat enclosed.

You can check power state transitions in Event viewer in order to see that your Task scheduler does bring it out of S0 Modern standby.
See Importing Event viewer, Custom views - my post #13 - TenForums

Do please note that you do not wake up a computer from S0 Modern standby because the computer is not asleep [not in S3 Sleep]. S0 Modern standby is an idle condition not a sleep state.

which concludes that So Modern standby consumes as little power as a comparable computer does in S3 Sleep.

You've posted in TenForums but would have got the same advice in ElevenForum.

Try3, Really appreciate this . The "test" will be IF computer brand matters as suggested in another Forum I quoted (HP blocks All attempts and Dell "maybe"). He didn't mention his brand but your data will be fully tested.

I'm Win 10 & he's 11, so I posted here from habit and the likelihood what's true for 10 would be the same in 11.

    Thanks again!!

When I was looking into getting a new computer that did not have S0 Modern standby last year, I found statements by Dell staffers in their community forums that none of their computers could have S0 Modern standby replaced by S3 Sleep.
FAQ Modern Standby - Dell Community
I tried to get confirmation of this for my shortlist of a couple of their models but nobody in Sales could answer me and they would not transfer me to technical staff [who, they said, are only permitted contact with customers after purchase].

HP did transfer me to their technical staff and they gave me honest answers - their documentation was not clear about it [it gave indications of having S3 Sleep but was not definitive about it, just like their user manual]. They also pointed out that I could try it & see - I could return it for any reason within 30 days and they would pay the return postage. So I bought it & tried it. This computer did have S0 Modern standby & it locked up if I tried to use S3 Sleep instead. So I returned it and got my money back.

Now that I have tamed S0 Modern standby [see my scripting & power consumption testing links above], I do not worry about it any more.

    All the best,
    Denis
