PC only boots after close down and restart

    Hi,

    Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit 22H2 OS Build 19045.3996

My PC has a fault. When I start the PC its POSTS okay but won't boot into Windows . If I close the PC by holding down the power button and once it has closed down, press the power button, the PC starts without any problems. It does this every time.

Also, if the PC isn't used for a few minutes and goes into hibernation, it won't come out of hibernation when the keyboard is tapped as it used to do. Again, I have to close the PC by holding down the power button and restarting.

I have scanned my boot SSD for errors (Seagate FireCuda 530), none were found. Scanned with "sfc /scannow" no errors found. Turned off 'Fastboot' in Windows. None of these made any difference.

If you have any ideas what might be wrong, I would really appreciate your input.

    Many thanks

    Welcome to tenforums.

How many disks do you have in your desktop? (many people omit disks from specs, alas).

    Suggestions:
    1. Check your disk(s) by running
Hard Disk Sentinel (covers SSDs, full functional trial. Just launch it, use tabs at left hand side to select each disk in turn). Green is good. Very useful commentary on rt.

    2. MOBO appears to be from 2016. Check your CMOS battery as your problem seems to relate to starting from power up.

    3.
    Turned off 'Fastboot' in Windows
I assume you mean Fast Startup

    4. Elimination.
Remove your system disk, put in a spare in the same slot.
    Install Windows
See if you have the same issues or not.

If you do, then suggests some hardware issue.
If not, probably something to do with your original system disk.

    5. Driver issues.
    a. This
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...8-a1a7ad7bbb96
    suggests GPU driver-related.

You might try setting your PC to boot to Safe Mode and see if that always boots successfully.

    b. This discusses possible driver conflict:

Yes, I know that people like hibernation!
But be aware, that hibernation is the gateway to hell. And you have a hibernation problem.
Switch it off and the BCD will be corrected within a couple of reboots. Don't force it.
Within one week your problem disappears!

    Can you explain why.

    Thanks.

    Hi Pentagon,

I downloaded and used Hard Disk Sentinel and it reported my SSD as 'Perfect'. I then went to a local store, which is the reason for the delay in replying, and bought a CR2023 BIOS battery. I have to confess I didn't think this would be the issue. The main symptom of this is usually when the PC 'forgets' the day and date. However, replacing the battery has solved the problem.

Many thanks, Pentagon and to everyone who took the time to reply.

    Best regards.

My previous PC suffered boot problems when the CMOS battery voltage dropped much below 3V. Remember to load the BIOS defaults after replacing the battery, reboot then configure your preferred settings.
