I'm now on my Win10 and I can capitalize file names on a USB SSD in a case. Just like on my Win11 I cannot rename a file on a USB Thumb drive to use a capital letter, anywhere in the name with mixed letters. Now am curious if it may be the difference between the usual FAT32 formatting of the Thumb drives versus NTFS of the larger SSD drives.

Update: Just checked an SDHC 1GB memory stick formatted as FAT by the camera, copied the same file to a FAT32-formatted Thumb drive and same issue with both. Reformatted the 128GB Thumb drive to exFAT, same problem.

Reformatted the 128GB to NTFS, no problem, renaming a file to a capitalized first letter works.

Added info: so far none of this problem exists in Linux Mint.

@Berton Is the renaming behavior consistent with what I wrote here?:
    Windows 10 filename case problem

    Les,
I've just used your procedure successfully on a Fat32 SD card.
Thanks for suggesting it; I had never noticed case renaming limitations before.

    All the best,

On your non-NTFS volume, if you start with a file like this:
    changecase.txt
    and rename it to this:
    ChangeCaseX.txt
and then rename it to this:
    ChangeCase.txt

What do you end up with?

That did work on an SDHC card with files on it. The ones that had caps in their name had been copied from other sources but I tried one without caps and it worked.

Then it is file that is the problem, not the drive it's on
If you can copy or create a new file on a different drive. And then copying the troubled file to another drive doesn't allow you to capitalize letters, then there is an issue with the file, not the drive

MS been dragging this bug since FAT-8, introduced in 1977. And was limited to 8Mo.

This behaviour is by design. Loll.

As I outlined here, there was no problem in Windows 7 and 8. Having to do a two-step rename to change case on FAT type volumes became a thing in Windows 10.
