Thumbnail is fine one mine.. I think the problem seems related to having a LOT of such files. See above.
Further, this file type is reported as problematic.. so perhaps @sargan shouldn't expect a magic free fix, which is what every poster wants instantly of course.

Okay thanks. The image displays thumbnails in Explorer fine for me and also displays correctly on other photo viewers.
Maybe temporarily change the default program for opening dng files to something else.
Plus clear thumbnail cache. Personally I kill Explorer then run:
Thumbnail Database Cleaner - IT Samples
Then reboot. There are other methods.
Also maybe change folder template for the problem folder to general items.

I have now created a folder of type Pictures containing 304 copies of Sargan's file.
Other than a short delay sometimes, thumbnails are displayed- I have nothing special configured added or installed that I can think of that would influence that.
Try searching for
dng file thumbnails problem
and you'll see a LOT of results- similar issues.
Some had a better experience with a certain codec pack:

Moved folder to desktop: thumbnails still fine.
I might agree that if the folder contains a lot of images then Explorer might trip up on thumbnail creation in which case use another dedicated image viewer.
An idea. XnView MP uses per folder thumbnail databases.

I did look at that link but the lonk to Adobe to install the codec is invalid .... I have asked on Adobe forum if the codec is still available.Sargan has a thread here too:

I would prefer not to have another app and fix the issue, but will consider it if I can't get problem fixed.
DNG is the standard format for professional photography, and until recently used to work fine on my PC ... I think somehow my folder attributes are messed up.

Just tried changing 'Picture' folder (and all sub folders to 'General Type' ) it lost all Thumbnails (incl jpeg) so changed back.
JPEG thumbnails returned but not DNG
It's very hard to guess what might not be configured 'correctly' on your PC.
Try this:
Create a new user for test purposes (delete later).
How do dng's behave then?
If the same problem, consider an in-place upgrade repair install.
Otherwise, consider e.g. resetting file associations to default (tutorial available).
Just some basic general ideas...
