Presently my dng files are associated with photoshop even though photoshop can't open a dng file directly. I can import a dng file into lightroom but a blank preview is displayed without a raw image handler. Doesn't have to be set as default. Just being installed should be good enough. I'm thinking because it.s only a raw file issue, that's the problem
As another test took a pic with camera ... it saves in RW2 format (Lumix)

I use the Adobe RAW file converter and it turns it into a DNG file.

So here is the anomaly .... an original DNG file is tagged as FileExtension_Invalid: tiff tif
A converted RW2 file to DNG is also tagged as FileExtension_Invalid: tiff tif
The converted file on desktop had no thumbnail, but when I double clicked to view, it then created a Thumbnail.
However when I move it to a sub folder of 'My_Pictures' it once again has no Thumbnail.
As requested here is the file that is fine on desktop but no thumbnail when moved to a folder. Dropbox - 0102P1001487.dng - Simplify your life

Not sure Mediainfo is reliable here. It's not offered as a context menu for this file type.

I used MediaInfo as used to using it for Video files, but as you say may not be that helpful.
Maybe consider:
The fastest photo and video organizer for Windows.
You should be able to use it to browse folders containing images (including RAW) and videos rather than using Explorer.
Downloaded - it does not add thumbnail to files either, it also fails to open some file - which do open in File Explorer

As DNG files have Thumbnail OK on desktop ... but removed when moved to subfolder in My Pictures .... could it be the folder attributes for 'My Pictures' are not optimal to allow DNG
Yes it could be used as a video/ image browser rather then explorer. I downloaded three test files.
All displayed fine in Diffractor:
In addition I get a thumbnail preview in Explorer where the default app is Snip n' Sketch.
I'm not expert on this. I just suggested Diffractor as an image browser (using the program and not using Explorer.)
There are other third party image viewers that might work. If you want previews in Explorer for all image formats then you'd probably need to install a third party shell extension or codec pack. I cannot advise on that.
