What do you plan on doing when 2025 comes around?

I don't think i will be going to Windows 11 its becoming increasingly clear that Windows in general is not going to be sustainable into the future. The fact that 2025 means a whole bunch of perfectly working computers are going to be exodus from the landscape.

Anything core series is still relative in ways that those computers suit many demographics, this means that anything from 1st gen right up to the required 8th gen is still relative for many people but we know that the biggest demographic in consumers are the types that will just throw those computers in the rubbish bin and then buy something that is compatible.

For people that actually enjoy computers this is a hit to those people the most because these are the people who enjoy computers of all ages. But overall its a disservice to everyone. An estimated 1 billion users on windows 10 atm and a big portion of that will pre gen 8 computers.

The signs are there windows 10 extended supports wants a subscription model while windows 11 is going to cause a massive E waste issue probably the biggest net of computers to date at one time.

I know what i am going to do and its no longer on windows, would like to hear what other people have planned. If reactOS was more stable and not opensource it would be a viable solution but its not.

By then Windows 12 will most likely be out. Hopefully, it will be good.

The new system requirements are for better security, but they can be bypassed.

the bypass is a temp fix but it locks you out from on going support to the point where you have to reinstall the OS from scratch again.

I think overall people will find way to bypass this stuff for older computers but overall its a cat mouse game and we are seeing more and more with Windows with these avenues they are now taking a tough luck policy on these things. Where in the past it was more open.

The signs are there. Windows is going the roads that most companies are and that is planned obsolescence.

Windows 11 is to usher in trusted computing. This is the whole reason for the exodus and above a certain generation cut off point being a hard rule because you can't do trusted computing without TPM.
Its in the name of security so it sounds good to people that are non the wiser because security sounds good to those people.

The tech could lead to full transparency for the end user. This is not something i want to support all though it will come to Linux too in time its just that with Linux i think you will be able to use older distros in a way where they are more secure than windows with it being the target demographic for malware.

Just in vision a world where the computer knows you and anytime you log onto a govt organization they know its you by your real world credentials in a way that is verified because crypto graphic signed keys inside the TPM. Social media? banking? pron? gaming? Entertainment? Everything you do online?

the ramifications are endless in that eventually it could be setup similar to real life like everyone knows who you are online by your real world credentials and there is no transparency to be had. Where is this going to end up? like this is all valid potential to come with time and there is already precursor systems now several actually if you are following the timeline,

porn passports are being pushed as an ethical thing in some countries and in other cases we are seeing singed crypto on data streams that verfies that data all it needs is the person real life identity tied to that data which is possible with TPM.

it also means organizations that data mine and sell on data will know what your habits are online and that it is verified because crypto. Basically a looking glass into you as a person that is 100% verified. It could also mean backlighting people because they looked at or said the wrong things online so you get painted a certain way which could damage reputation.

Just think you log onto a forum like this and it has a little tick next to your name on your profile and therefore everyone knows its you like the real you. Sounds good for security right? but the potential ramifications that go past that are enormous for unethical practices.

oh yeah forgot they want everyone to have TPM because is about security. Its a double edge sword trusted computing is one part security but it also in time will be proving who you are because that is what trusted computing is about.

Loved Windows 7, and moved to Windows 8 for software compatibility reasons, literally loved (still love W8). Then had to move to W10 for the same reasons and I literally hated it, but over time managed to find an specific W10 version (official) that I like for speed and size, then I customized it removing what I don't need and it's even faster. I've been using W10 quite satisfied and plan to stay here as long as it's possible.

Now, Windows 11... I don't like it, I have tried, used it, and I think I can make the jump, but I don't like what Microsoft seems to be projecting as the new direction. BUT, as time goes by, methods to improve the experience will be available and pretty sure I will use NLite again to take better control over W11. At least my current hardware (desktop) can run it pretty well.

This what I'm doing right now: I use my big desktop computer with huge screen for stuff that needs that kind of power, and I use my Surface for daily browsing, I don't need anything else and this limits my experience to work/tools. I work on my own and this gives me this kind of freedom, but I know... if a nice job on a company appears that convinces me enough to move there, I will have to work with whatever they have. This is what happened to MacOSX, I worked with Macs daily, since System 7.5, and I never liked the current OS (X), but for work there is a moment where it disappears even if I don't like it, I think the same will happen to Windows (at lest for me).

Linux is a nono for me. Used it in the past for daily work and personal preference, loved it, but it has changed a lot that I became another user who won't come back for it for daily driving. Tried this just last year, and I don't like the direction it's taking, and I don't want to keep exploring diff distros every 1-2 years. I have very specific software needs, and unlike in the past, Wine is broken for me, no longer a functional option, and the native alternatives really suck, besides personally needing to be integrated on a workflow with other people on software not available or compatible with Linux. Perphaps only for browsing the web, but that's all.

Mmm... currently on W10 I use Mail (Microsoft), and now I'm getting the messages to upgrade to the "New Outlook", I don't want to, yet, the OS constantly installs it and now I have a permanent message on the mail app telling me to try it, again: I don't want to. I have been ignoring this message and removing the new outlook, but today I couldn't do anything and it displayed a message saying "taking me to the new outlook" and I had no other option, I hate this. Ok, again clicked ok... and it says I need to install Edge in order to run Mail.

I hate that, I don't use Edge and I won't install/upgrade it just to run a mail app. I'm moving to another mail client then. This is what happens when people run out of options, but yeah they will say it's for safety reasons.

Yeah i think in general we are in a messy af situation and many ppl are blind to it. I know what you are saying about Linux, over the last few years it too is becoming less desirable for reasons. But from what i can see its the only viable soultuion to windows.

The only reasons i use windows is because of software and that windows has the most support for software being the most popular.

I'll just "wait and see". My need is for when clients decide to change and I have to learn what the new stuff is. As for Linux, I like Mint version [based on Debian/Ubuntu] for a couple things I can use but since there's about a hundred different versions 'flavors' there should be something for a lot of users. And there's some cross-platform programs available for both Windows and Linux such as LibreOffice and VLC just to name a couple.
