Its a tough decision, i have computers that can go to win 11 but i don't really want to support it at the same time because i have plenty of other computers that can't and those computers can still do many things.

The other stuff i mentioned is only a potential but there is clear signs that this is a likely outcome that we will face in the coming years because trusted computing.
We wont be able to escape it tbh. I have talked to others that are in IT and cybersecurity and they are of the same opinions that it is a very likely outcome to come. it wont happen straight away either it will be drawn out over years.

i don't know how everyone else feels on the topic but if it really does go this way then it feels like there will be no choice in anonymity online. I don't know about you but i don't tell the post man every single thing about me or the person i say hi to while walking down the street either, same as the grocer at the checkout when i purchase my groceries. In this context these system could have potential to do that in the form of everything you do online will be recorded and 100% verified.

VPN? well it will only mask your IP and geo location like it is doing currently.

its multifaceted so with win 11 for the people who like running computers that are only like 5 years old but not viable anymore because of the requirement then that is a loss and imo its anti computer.

subscription model for support also sounds like dark times its forced bias and basically a fk you to the consumers. The 1 billion net that will be wide of pre gen 8 pc's is huge money generation to come already.

I've used windows since version 3.1 and all versions since. Now I'm on W10 but since MS don't have newer version for my trusty 7 year old gaming laptop, and I don't want to make landfill out of it, I installed another ssd in it and installed Xubuntu as my daily driver. I haven't had any need for W10 so far. I also bought a second hand Mac mini for my TV and it has been working just fine.

So in 2025 I'm not sure if I am going to buy another laptop with W11 (W12). I'm happy with my Linux and Mac switch so far. I'm not so much into gaming but I have a X-plane 11 Flight simulator which works fine both on W10 and Linux.

In my case MS has pushed me away from windows! In fact my W10 has been working just fine for seven years without a hitch (lockups or bluescreens) But if MS don't want me as a user so be it!

PS! I've never done a reinstall of W10 since 7 years and only a repair once. Tha'ts wy I'm unwilling to switch my laptop. Obviously the combination of the hardware and the OS (W10 and Linux) on my laptop was a winner!

i am also on the same windows since 10 came out so i have a lot of data on my main pc that is not viable to carry on. I am at a conundrum as to move this all to windows 11 or just right it all off in a image and then migrate to Linux with the image being in case i want to restore that data to a compatible computer.

I think i am just going to move to Linux full time and exodus windows completely, i feel that over the years to come it will just race more and more and eventually we will have to update the computers at the same interval as windows with this logic. I don't have the money to do that every 3 years tbh and computers last a lot longer than 3 years in terms of viability.

its a slow game we are only at the start so its going to be done over years. Because there is billions of users they know migration is a long process. Example we know in the banking and finacial sector there is still many systems that are still using XP, you'd be surprised.

Really wouldn't be surprised, some versions of Windows may still be supported depending upon what the users want to pay for that extended support. Mostly it will be due to proprietary software that hasn't been or can't be updated for the newer versions, last one I saw was the X-Ray setup in an animal clinic running on Win7.

its exactly that because many institutions run proprietary software usually its not monetary involved its just because the software does not work past a certain windows revision. In many other cases its because the companies are lazy or because updating to newer software at scale is costly.

it was mainly just a generalization in terms of that there is still a lot of computers locked in for many reasons and in terms of that migration on a wide scale to post win11 is going to take a long time.

The other fact that is this is where our E waste ends in at the end of the line yeah real ethical and the worlds resources are limited.

Squeak and pay for the updates post 2025 - excusing myself on the grounds of being so environmently friendly I'm not ditching functional PCs for the sake of one with a Copilot key in place of the Windows key.

One thing that the newer versions of Windows may accomplish more folks looking at the various 'flavors' of Linux that are available [about a hundred] that will run on current Win10 and older machines, at least back to Win7, maybe older if a 32-bit version of Linux is found. I have some different versions of the bootable Linux USB, Mint, Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubunt, Feron, Voyager, Budgie. Some of them have Desktops somewhat similar to Windows.

Yeah i am not ditching functional pc's either. To me its anti the very thing i enjoy and that is computers. I have a whole range of computers and parts which are totally viable to me but are now considered obsolete by Windows standards. Half of these computers are not even marked legacy yet by Intel.

I don't even care for AI its going to be a downfall in many ways. Who would of thought 40 years ago that something like this is a potential future? I am sure the average consumer on their IBM computer had no idea because its just a movie plot. Now we are seeing robots walking around in 2024

The opening line in the trailer is saying early 21st century well we are early 21st century still because it ends at 2100. The movie also pre dates the 21st century by 20 years.

Windows 11 is to usher in trusted computing. This is the whole reason for the exodus and above a certain generation cut off point being a hard rule because you can't do trusted computing without TPM.
    ...
So how is it that it is so easy to install Windows 11 via bypassing TPM 2.0?
Windows 11 certainly runs just fine without TPM available.
I know of no end user applications that require TPM. Can you name any?

Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows 12, Windows 13, ... is just a ponzi scheme by Microsoft to keep the dollars flowing in IMHO.

I have perfectly serviceable hardware that runs Windows 7 and Windows 10 just fine. Very well in fact.
Not ditching it for no reason other than TPM 2.0 and a new(er) CPU to run Windows 11. Or 12. Or 13.
So I'll be running Windows 10 until the cows come home. And if I have to, switch to desktop Linux as my primary as an alternative.
Already ditched all Microsoft apps (Office ...) for the LibreOffice versions.
Firefox browser, Thunderbird email, all run fine on Linux.
I can't think of one Microsoft App that I use at this point.

Security... I have a love and hate reaction to this word.

I don't live in a cave, sure I understand the importance of security and trusted computing, I want my data to be secure both on my computer and online. But security has become an abused term probably around bad practices.

    - Hey, stop what you are doing, for security reasons there is this update, and we need to restart
    - Wooo, wait there, there is another security update, download 500MB and restart
    - Surprise!! you just restarted, but guess what? another update!!!! yeah, it's for security reasons
    - Yes, your browser needs updating too, for security reasons, ok, like 10 times per month
    - Eh? yes, we just introduced this background app with our application in order to check for integrity, you know... security!!!
    - No no, we won't allow you to do this, you must delete this app or upgrades NOW, you know... for security reasons
    - Is this your favorite app? for 10 or more years? bad news for you, we are enforcing the deletion of this app and you must use this one instead... no no no, don't try keeping the old app, as your OS, I will make sure you can't use it anymore, you know, for security reasons
    - You just paid and downloaded another app about 2G in size? in about 2 months we will tell you about the updates you need, for security reasons

you know, its all for your own good!
