Ok, use Shellexview to disable all non-MS shell extensions to see if that makes any difference.
Since I'm new to the program, how do I do that?

Above the event viewer was mentioned- note the time of the crash and then use
Fulleventlogview (free) - simple linear list of events so easier to find what you want.
I deliberately ran an mp4 file and got the following error.

This is the first instance of the error seen during this time period
on Storport Device (Port = 0, Path = 1, Target = 0, Lun = 0) whose Corresponding Class Disk Device Guid is {6bb6c988-c6f2-8ce3-9175-5b2f53bfe1fd}:
The request opcode was 0xA2 and completed with SrbStatus 0x4 and ScsiStatus 0x0.
    The sense code was (0x0,0x0,0x0).
The io latency was 1 ms.

Also look at your Reliability History at that time- that's easy to do.
    Again, never done that before.

Edit: Ooops, yup, I found it. Something I never had to do before. No errors.

See the little square boxes down the side? Click in them.

The program is meant to be intuitive. All of us have to learn to use different programs.

And if you were to search the Tutorials section you might find

One thing I can think of: Grab portable:

Explorer++ - A small and fast file manager for Windows

Extract files. Then run the program - right click > run as admin

Browse to a problem mp4 file and right click. If you can see a context menu without it crashing - post a screenshot of it.

    Nothing's been changed or adjusted.
It's more than likely your EzCd program.

Run Autoruns again and select the Everything tab or the Explorer tab. Now in the search box above enter ezcd. You should see two entries. Uncheck each one. Now reboot your computer via the start menu bottom left corner of the screen.

Consequently, You might be able to uninstall EzCd and when you reinstall it may ask if you want to add a right click menu option. Chose no.

Yeah, I right-mouse click the file in Explorer ++ and it comes up with the standard context menu.

That's a relatively new program and I know the issue was going on before I installed it a month ago.

So based on the right click not crashing Explorer++ it does point to a shell extension issue.

Explorer++ is know to get around some shell extension issues so that's the most likely thing to look for or check.

Those programs that you can see in the context menu - check for updates for them and install the updates if found. Reboot and test.

If you still get a crash then check if it's all mp4 files by downloading a fresh one and see if it does the same thing.

Otherwise you can disable shell extensions for the listed programs but then they will lose functionality.

If all softwares listed are free - uninstall all of it including leftover scans and reboot. Then install a fresh copy of VLC and try playing a file. If it works, add the other programs back one by one testing each in turn once installed.

You've been given 2 programs that help you disable shell extensions.

    Have you used them yet?

You could... disable extensions, check the problem disappears, then enable them until it reappears. Thus find the one - or ones - responsible...
