Clean screenshots outside of Windows GUI

    Dear @Brink or anyone else,

How do you get such clean pictures(screenshots) of windows in Windows (OOBE, for example) in your posts (e.g. tutorial threads)? Are you using a camera? My photos are all skewed and would really like to know your secret.

    Thanks in advance.

    Kind regards,

Often the screenshots are of the Windows OS running inside a VM (virtual machine).

As a result, it's easy to screencap what's happening from boot onwards.

    Hope this helps...

Exactly. I get the screenshots from a virtual machine.

You might consider de-skewing your photos with the [free] utility PerspectiveImageCorrection.

When I take pictures outside the normal Windows environment I use the camera on my phone. I then edit the picture with Photoshop Elements. With that I can crop the picture, correct skewing, and resize it. Here is an example:

I originally used MyPhoneExplorer to download the original picture (2072 KB ; width 56 inches). It was too large to upload load here so I used Phone Link to download the picture again (size 914 KB ; width 32.5 inches). Note this picture is apparently smaller because Phone Link must compress the picture before it downloads it.

The following pictures were taken of the screen on my Acer laptop with Windows 10 Pro. I took the pictures with my Samsung S21 phone. I download the pictures on my Asus laptop with Windows 11 Pro.

#1 Original (new) (size 914 KB ; width 32.5 inches)

#2. Cropped and corrected skewing (size 294 KB; width 24.5 inches)

#3. Resized (size 108 KB; width 12.2 inches)

Wow, that is pretty impressive, Mr. Ed. Seems a lot to go through when attempting a timely response, but it's worth it, I see. Thanks for the steps.

I really just described how I did it not the actual steps. I have any questions about the details just ask.

The program I use is Photoshop Elements which is not free. Maybe someone else can suggest else that is free.

Sometimes I take a bunch of pictures to document something. It is hard to hand hold the phone camera. In that case I use a tripod with a clamp for my phone. It comes with a wireless remote to take the picture. I still may have to use Photoshop Elements to make corrections to the pictures but not as many.

If you are just taking a picture of your computer screen outside of windows, as stated, taking the picture with your smart phone is usually good quality. You can save the picture to your computer by connecting the phone to your computer via it's charging cable. In most cases you do not need to edit the picture to upload it to a Forum.

As stated, If you want better quality pics, you can use a Tripod. You can do minimal editing in the Phone Camera app.
Or you can use other photo editors like the afore mentioned Adobe apps, or you can use the free IrfanView - Official Homepage - One of the Most Popular Viewers Worldwide
