    Add a taskbar icon

Im computer dumb. started moving things around in taskbar, fouled things up. (and the screen 'color' faded)....all I want is icons in the taskbar to click on for sites I go to often, like I used to have, but somehow I screwed things up, now they are gone. now I cant figure out how to get things back, tried a couple of ways

Hi, have you tried using a System Restore point created before this happened?

Note that you can have one created e.g. daily on schedule- tutorial available in the searchable Tutorials section

tried, it only showed one for day before, but I think thats when things went wrong, not positive, but after couple of hours it said it didnt go thru fully anyway. (I thought you could just pick previous dates)

    Thank you for your reply.

I understand you only found 1 restore point, and trying to use it did not complete anyway.
(In which case nothing has changed, as you know).

Even if you had more restore points, as SR isn't working for you, I doubt that would help.

For reference: 'Choose a different Restore Point' =>

In my case I have one created daily on schedule (see tutorial in the searchable Tutorials section) - and you can another 2 more at least.

    ===================
Given that SR isn't available to you, how recent is your most recent disk image?
However, restoring a disk image might seem excessive for this case.

You may have noticed how frequently disk imaging is mentioned here (e.g. Macrium Reflect, Aomei Backupper etc)
    ===================

If all you've lost is URL shortcuts, that's quite trivial- easily recreated. Or, if deleted, you could check the Recycle bin.
(Personally I'd never fill my taskbar with things like that).

If you've moved them elsewhere - try searching for them- or maybe you've created a taskbar toolbar (folder on your taskbar with shortcuts in it).

holy moly, dont get most of what you're saying. I know it was easy if even I was able to do it before. I was really worried when I hit the button to try a system restore, figured I would make things worse. totally in the dark when I read things like "disk imaging". such a simple thing it seems, just having icon to click on to bring up a website. and forgot to say using msft edge.

Let me try to make it very simple for you.

    1. You've lost something
    2. You want it back
    3. You don't know how to find it
    4. You want things back as they were.
    5. System Restore doesn't work for you.
    6. You could try searching for the lost items- I assume you have.
    7. You could restore your system to 'as was' before this happened had you been using 3rd party disk imaging regularly and routinely as members endlessly recommend here.
    8. You don't know what disk imaging is.
9, You should be using it.
    10. Google can help you.

Finally, if all you've lost is a few shortcuts- then if that's all the problem is- and you can't find them- recreate them.

But there are better, safer and less cluttered ways to keep links like that.

right, 'all Ive lost is some shortcuts'. so I thought this would be simple. and having them right there in the takbar, in view all the time, is simple, and for the amount I had, is not cluttered. seems there should be a couple of clicks, and "pin to taskbar" and done. I did a process, came to "pin to taskbar", but it didnt.

Most Shortcuts can be dragged to the taskbar.
Or, you can go to C:\Program Files, or C:\Program Files (x86) find the folder for the app, find the .exe that runs the app, and Right click it and choose to Pin to Taskbar.

As we Endlessly recommend here and most other forums your may visit, you should create a System Image file and save it to a USB HDD. How to use Macrium Reflect to create an image of your PC hard drive | Windows Central
If your system gets bonked or your drive fails, you will be able to restore the whole system the way it was when the image was created.

figured out desktop shortcut, but without the "favicon". tried to drag it to takbar, but it wont. instead, now I just get a yellow square when I put the arrow there. I keep it there a few seconds and the name of one of the icons I used to have there is "printed" above the yellow box. and the search box at bottom left now also turns yellow when I go in it.

I dont even know where to go/how to find a "C:\Program Files" and folders/apps/and exe's. I know there's no way I went thru anything like that before, way over my head. If I did it, I know there was a simple way. maybe that simple 3 dots/more tools/pin to taskbar worked before and thats how I did it, cant remember. but it doesnt work now. when things get much more involved than that, I get confused, and worried I'll make things worse.

I dont even know where to go/how to find a "C:\Program Files" and folders/apps/and exe's.
You go to the Yellow folder on the Taskbar which is File (Windows) Explorer. This gives you a listing of all the files on your computer within your C: drive. Browse to the path I outlined in post #8.

There are several ways to do things on a Windows computer. If one doesn't work, you can try another. If all ways don't work, then you should try a Repair Install, keeping files.
