Occasionally a repair install can fail to complete... in just the same way as a feature update (upgrade) can - if there's specific corruption or a problem migrating some driver etc etc. 3rd party programs or remnants thereof can get in the way.

For most people, an in-place upgrade repair works, but there's no absolute guarantee given the way the O/S is structured so as to be so vulnerable, and the effect a few 3rd party programs and drivers may have. I.e. what's possible depends on the history of the installation.

Regular 3rd party imaging can often give you a second chance, but only if you become aware of the problem and the problem was caused more recently than an image you have.
Your so correct in your comments that all I can say is thank for your valuable input.

Happy Holiday & New Years! to you too.

I have never had any luck in doing a Reset or a repair install. I find it best to do a clean install.

To make thinks easier I do a complete backup and make a list of all important software I need to reinstall. After I do the clean install I check the hardware for needed drivers and then do Windows updates until there are no more. I then start installing only the software I really need. It is a lot of work but worth all the aggregation of dealing with the former problems.
Well had I known about the registry being kept I wouldn't of wasted my time. I guess the reason I did so was for me a total clean in stall means more work since it will put my digital back to 20h2 then I'll take the update file so it becomes 22H2! I have all my apps backed up but man its a lot of work re -installing them all, not to mention having to cut some of shaft off of Microsoft's dictatorship on how it wants everything bit of data, use their browser etc.. I shall wait till I'm in good mood to finally take the leap to a clean install. Thank you for your input on this topic. cheers mate's

    - not sure why you need to start from 20H2- you can create a fresh bootable disk for the current build and use that..

Assuming you have a current disk image of what you have now, you can rescue some things you may have forgotten to back up.

Things like browser-related data, settings, extensions/add-ons, favourites- hope you don't use passwords saved by your browser- and email client-related data are best specifically backed up from your current build.

Also ensure you have all programs' license keys as required.

There are 3rd party programs that support moving a user profile/programs/documents etc to a new PC or installation on a 1-off fee basis- e.g. Laplink PC Mover, Easeus ToDo PC Trans

I thought I could just export browser setting and then import them after I reinstall Windows. With Firefox and Edge that made a mess of things. Doing that seems to merge the old with the new. I would have preferred that it replaced the new with the old.

With Firefox I found much better to copy the whole profile folder to another drive. After I reinstall Windows and run Firefox the first time it creates a new profile folder. I just overwrite that contents of that profile folder with the contents of the old saved profile folder. After I run Firefox again it looks the same as before I reinstalled Windows. This has worked well for over ten years.

Exactly, best to do it the right way for whichever browser(s) you happen to use.

What is the best way for a given browser? Exporting and importing doesn't work for me. I really don't like the way I do it because copying the whole profile contents at some point could break something that has changed for that browser. In any case I will keep doing it the way I do until I find something better.

If you Sign In to Firefox and sync, all your Firefox bookmarks, passwords and settings are available on every device that you sign into. No need to Import the FF Profile.
