You should always Backup (ie) Copy and Paste, or Drag and Drop, your personal files (ie) Documents, Downloads, Desktop, etc, to an External USB HDD before performing any evasive surgery, just in case it doesn't go your way.

Doing a Windows Reset is the quickest and easiest way to get back to where you were before this started.

Once you have your computer updated and the way you want it, you should do what is endlessly recommended here and all other forums to do a System Image of your computer with a 3rd party app, like Macrium Reflect or your favorite Imaging/Cloning app, and save the image to your external USB HDD.

When disaster strikes, you can easily restore your saved image and be back in business in a matter or minutes, not hours or days.

Thanks again spunk. I have 5 external backups but none are over 1TB. ;( But I always back up my documents pictures etc.. every other day. I do have
    Macrium Reflect
but as stated money tight yes I know they come down in price but I can't afford at this time to buy at least a 2TB which would then allow me to make an ISO for safety reasons. Thanks again for your continued help and support and may you your Family have a great Holiday Season. That also goes to all the supper members who have offered their support also. cheers mate

An Image file using Macrium or any other Imaging app, is a compressed file it is not an ISO. The Image file will be large but it will not be the full Used Space capacity size of your OS disk.

spunk I had no idea it would be smaller than an ISO! So if I understand you correctly your saying a 1TB would take that image? Hate putting you on the spot but again I was led to believe that one would need at least a 2TB for making backups of ones entire system. Thanks again mate you have been very helpful.

What is the Used Space of the drive you want to make an Image file of?
The compressed image is normally about half the size of the used data in the partition(s)
So, if you have a 1TB drive that is, say Half Full, around 500 GB, the Image file of the whole system will be around 250 GB. So, you can make a few image files of different computers and save them all on the same disk.

I can't thank you enough for this information. I have a couple of 1TB externals and was just looking at how much free space on this one which is showing 822GB free so its to bad that I must re-install windows again but at least I have the space to do an entire backup. Thanks again spunk.

    You are most welcome.
You should do an Image file and save it to your external, Get in the habit of doing this regularly. But if you are doing a Windows Reset, in most cases, you will not loose any files, and should only take several minutes.

Just An Update On PC Reset 22H2

That will be the last time I do IMHO is nothing more than a dirty install. Either Microsoft didn't tell me that my Registry would remain untouched or I wasn't paying attention. So after doing this Reset PC and finally log back in of course all my apps were gone but I have many external backups so its just tedious doing the work with nothing more than I still have that problem with
Text Services Framework is not running so I guess you could say it was just a waste of time. I'm still using my PC until I can find the time to do a complete clean install which I'm not thrilled about but that's life.

On another note I would like to wish every remember a Happy Holiday & New Years! Thanks again for all the help I've got from really good people and this is the best forum where to get help.

    Cheers,

Happy Holiday & New Years! to you too.

I have never had any luck in doing a Reset or a repair install. I find it best to do a clean install.

To make thinks easier I do a complete backup and make a list of all important software I need to reinstall. After I do the clean install I check the hardware for needed drivers and then do Windows updates until there are no more. I then start installing only the software I really need. It is a lot of work but worth all the aggregation of dealing with the former problems.

Occasionally a repair install can fail to complete... in just the same way as a feature update (upgrade) can - if there's specific corruption or a problem migrating some driver etc etc. 3rd party programs or remnants thereof can get in the way.

For most people, an in-place upgrade repair works, but there's no absolute guarantee given the way the O/S is structured so as to be so vulnerable, and the effect a few 3rd party programs and drivers may have. I.e. what's possible depends on the history of the installation.

Regular 3rd party imaging can often give you a second chance, but only if you become aware of the problem and the problem was caused more recently than an image you have.
