HP Laptop - Windows10 shut down and then reboots with USB message

I has happened twice on my HP Laptop (new model) running Windows 10 Pro 22H2 where it shut down on it's own and rebooted with a BLUE popup message about the USB.
Last night we were watching news, streaming,, and I had the HP laptop plugged into a HDMI cable from the Smart TV. All of a sudden we get a sharp POP, the screen goes black with back and white squares randomly popping up all over the screen, and then it shuts down and rebooted.

On reboot it loaded Windows 10 as normal, except that there was a blue pop up message that said:
"Keep the USB drive plugged in.
Only remove it after your PC has shut down completely. Otherwise your Windows To Go workspace might crash and you could loose data.

Only thing plugged in is a USB device for the mouse, and that's it. NO other USB device. I've shut this laptop down at the kitchen table lots of times and don't get that message.
This happened one other time when I had just plugged the laptop into the HDMI cable from the TV. Laptop shut down instantly on it's own, as in no warning, and then rebooted.

I'll post a picture of what I am getting for a message.
This laptop is a HP 15-dy2132wm model using 16GB ram and a 1TB NVMe hard drive. Drivers are up to date and Windows has been kept up to date. Firefox just updated when it rebooted plugged into HDMI port at the TV.

Hi, there seem to be two issues here.

    a. What caused the laptop to shut down

    b. What you see when it tries to boot

    Turning to the first:
All of a sudden we get a sharp POP, the screen goes black with back and white squares
    - I guess you mean the TV screen?
This happened one other time when I had just plugged the laptop into the HDMI cable from the TV.
I wonder if you might have an earth problem.

Whilst you could start looking at your event viewer, it seems the trigger for the laptop's shutdown is not to do with Windows, but has an external cause.

By way of a workaround, are you able to cast videos to your TV? Are both the TV and laptop connected to your router? Does your TV support Miracast?

The screen being black was on both the TV and the laptop monitor. There is a stand right beside the TV and I have an extra power cord that all I do is transfer the transformer cord to that cord, plug in, and then plug the end into the laptop. So it has continual power, and not relying on the battery all the time.

Yes, the TV and the laptop are both connected to our router / internet. We have Frontier DSL and it links all our devices. Rather than just "stream" from the laptop, though the router, it is much easier just to move the laptop over next to the TV when I want to stream the news, and we get sound and picture on the TV which is exactly the same image on the laptop monitor.
I plug the HDMI in live, meaning I do not shut down the laptop to plug in the HDMI, nor do I shut down the laptop to remove the HDMI cable. It should be "HOT PLUG" capable, meaning I should be able to plug in under power and disconnect under power.... kind of like a regular USB drive.

The first time it shut down all of a sudden I had just plugged in the HDMI cable into the HDMI slot on the laptop. Down it went, no warning, just powered off. When I powered back up that message is what I got the first time. Now this second time, my wife and I both saw the black/white squares popping up all over the TV screen and on the laptop monitor. Then it shut clear down. I thought at first we had lost our streaming feed, or it was circling like it does sometimes, buffering, before continuing.

Mention of viewing my "Event Viewer".. I did find "Event Viewer" with a quick search. Looked at it, but not sure exactly "what" I might be looking for. There was something in there about fail to load a certain driver. Will have to look at Device Manager and see if there is a driver for the HDMI plug in for this HP Laptop. Might be a start.
    Thanks!

Thanks - I have used exactly the setup you described, with a wireless mouse...(!) - but now I have an Amazon Firestick I don't need to use my laptop for that- the older TV doesn't support Miracast, although I can cast from a Chrome browser, and cast audio files and some video formats for example. (Chrome: 3 dots top rt, Cast- only for specific video sites). (It's not possible to pair an Amazon Firestick and a PC apparently).

As you say, simply plugging in the HDMI cable shouldn't be a problem.

Recently I had to use the event viewer to find why one PC was failing to cast.
I simply noted the time when I got the error, which was every time I tried to cast- so easily reproducible.

Then I used Fulleventlogview (free) which is a simple linear list of events and looked for an appropriate event logged at that time.

Much easier than using the event viewer.

The first case you mention is when it was already plugged in. Do you remember where the 'pop' came from?
That could just have been a consequence of the stream being suddenly interrupted of course.

History: had you previously been using a different PC in this way without issues?

Considering the shutdown- is that really sudden and abrubt or the normal graceful shutdown?

If the former, there may be no useful log report.
Could the laptop have been overheating?

You can also try looking at Reliability History, again at the appropriate time.

Shutdown is sudden and abrupt. No message saying shutting down, just like a desktop if you were to press the on/off switch on the back of the power supply.

Try leaving the laptop on overnight set not to sleep and see if it shuts down by itself. Not connected to the TV.

Also try running stress tests on it. Try to prove the laptop is stable for 'long enough'.

I leave the HP Laptop on 24/7 After no interaction after 30 minutes it goes into "screen saver" mode where it displays pictures in a folder I designated. After 4 hours the screen is set to go off. Basically it just shuts down the screen image like it would if I just press the power button. Yes, I changed the power scheme so that if I press the power button briefly, the screen turns of. any mouse movement or key input brings the screen back online instantly.

When it is moved from the table to the stand beside the TV, it is still on, running on battery, until I plug it into the power again. When I move it back to the table afterward it is still on (battery) until I plug it back into power. Since it is a new laptop the battery seems to really do well disconnected for a bit. I've left it running on just battery while watching a TV show for an hour (plugged into HDMI) and no issues.

If it runs connected to the TV when on battery I would begin as said at the start to suspect an earthing issue of some sort.

That said, earth continuity depends on how the charger is made.

Was the laptop connected to the same mains socket as the TV when you used it with the charger?

The charger is the usual 3 prong that connects to the outlet and there is a "TRI" connection that fits into the charger/transformer module. I have extra charger cords and so I left one into the wall socket that the TV is also connected to. I do not connect to the TV other than the HDMI connection.

We streamed FOX news last night for 3 hours and nothing happened. I have streamed several hours on nearly every night during the week and nothing happens. When I get done I change the selection from HDMI1 back to TV (Air) and I minimize the tab open that has the streaming URL that I was viewing and then close that tab. Then I remove the HDMI cable, and disconnect from the power plug that goes in the side of the laptop, move the laptop back over to the table, disconnect the power adapter from the one by the TV and plug it into the power cord near the table. Then I plug the power connector back into the HP Laptop.

The issue with complete shut down while near the TV is random. It has happened 2 times in the last 4 weeks, after many times of connecting to the TV, watching the streaming, and using the HDMI to view the streaming, and then disconnecting and back to the table. MOST of the time, you see no issues, no power down suddenly. The laptop remains connected to AC power cord/adapter for days and is on for days. No issues. If I power down it does it as normal and reboots, or boots up as normal.

Of note, I have never used or created a USB "Windows To Go" device. So there is only 1 USB device, the mouse, which is common to the laptop by itself on the table or on the stand next to the TV.
There are no other USB devices plugged in while streaming or connected to the HDMI cable , that is is on the right side of the laptop .
