Shadow around files when hovering has expanded

I don't know what it's called, but the shadow around a file when I hover on it has changed size and shape; it used to be a vertical rectangle, now it's a horizontal shadow and has expanded in size, If it touches another file the file moves when the other file does. Is there a way to revert the shadow to a small area like it was before?

Hi, I'm going to try a guess- do you mean the translucent rectangle you see when hovering over an icon on your desktop?

A screenshot would help. (Tutorial available if needed).

FWIW I see no change in this.

If you wish, you can try an experiment, and disable this effect:
Turn On or Off Translucent Selection Rectangle on Desktop in Windows

I note that at 19044 (21H2) your build is somewhat behind.. is there any reason for that?

    I

I upgraded my Windows after posting...my Windows is doing several weird things, but this is causing me no end of grief.
When I reboot all my icons scatter, and if I move one, any icon that the "shadow" touches moves too.
I am on a severely limited income, so I can't take my laptop in to a shop...thanks for the link, I'll try that.
Dos is like Turkish to me...I don't know how to use it. But I can follow simple instructions...

When I uncheck that box, will it effect the performance of my files?

Thanks. As there's no screenshot, again I can only think you're referring to your 'desktop' display.

    History please:
    When did this start?
    What happened before that?

For test purposes only please create a new user account. (This can be deleted later).
    Log in as that user.
Do you see the same problem?

Boot to Safe Mode, logging into the original user account.
    Do you notice anything unusual?

When I uncheck that box, will it effect the performance of my files?
Files don't have a 'performance' rating that I can think of.

Disabling visual effects reduces the load on your processor very slightly - obviously, as it has less to do...

    OK...let me be more specific...
As I stated, when my icons leap from one spot on my desktop to another spot, I move them back. If the icons are touching each other's "shadow" it brings the other icon with it when I move it. Will that not change just because I turn off the visual?

I guess I don't know how to upload a screenshot, I clicked on "image" , chose the rtf file with the screenshot, and clicked on upload. Nothing happens.
Never mind...I will make a jpg file and attach that...lol...reading works good.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Let me be very clear for you.

    1. I do not have your symptom
    2. I have never had, seen, heard of or experienced your symptom

Therfore, it follows that you will have to do some work.. some experimentation, trial and error in an effort to try to determine what may or may not be causing this.

Do you- can you- understand that?

I know full well everyone wants an instant magical fix for free - but life is simply not like that.

You still have not posted a screenshot. Why is that? I cannot see your PC, only imagine what you are seeing, as, sadly, my crystal ball is down for unforeseen maintenance.

Now that's a lot of typing for me..... alas... over to you.

Gee...I don't remember asking you for an instant fix...I assumed this forum, this thread, is for Win10 help. Sorry you are working so hard...I would help you if the situations were reversed. Anyway...here's a screenshot of the problem laptop and my ok backup laptop.

This image from the Change-desktop-icon-spacing-windows-10 Tutorial shows a similar behavior. So maybe an answer there.

I'd say change desktop icon spacing to default then reboot.

Windows desktop icon spacing messed up

The screenshots you've provided that I was asking for from the beginning are probably the essential clue for someone to help you. Thank you for finally providing them.

This free tweak tool may be of interest: compare your figures - there's an option to set to default there too:
