window automatically deletes a file, how to always allow on device?

I recall pre windows 10, with MS essential or windows defender, there exist settings to not automatically delete files, or at least ask prior to auto quarantine. but it seems in windows 10 it doesn't have this function? I have a fan software for laptop that has some root access requirement and directly fiddles with EC which is picked up by win 10 security/protection w/e.

it allows me to restore the file, but the restored file is already quarantined and corrupted no longer works. and even if it did I gotta click so many things to get to the section.

how to prevent this? or any ways to make it easier

I can but that doesn't solve any future problem of other files.

if its just a setting to change then it'd be the best. lets say I move the file by copying to a USB, it would trigger the security warning and it'd be several mouse movement + several clicks to resolve it. once directory path change it'll happen again it is so damn annoying.

on 8 or 7, the notification that pops up already has option asking you to quarantine or remove, at most 2 clicks and all in the same area so not much mouse movement at all, but on windows 10:

    - clicking on notification area bringing you to "virus and threat protection"
    - moving mouse down to protection history
    - clicking on protection history
    - moving mouse to the "threat/blocked etc"
    - clicking on it to expand it further
    - moving mouse down to action
    - clicking on it to allow on device/restore

seriously hating the new trend of large UI, scrolling forever to find what you want etc.

    Thank you for your reply.

If you know the folder where such files are saved you can set that as an exception.

There are numerous complaints of the behaviour you describe- quarantining without prompting.
    See:
Can I configure windows defender to never quarantine files

for a technical discussion and possible options.

    Clearly laid out here:
Disable auto quarantine in Windows Defender - Aavtech

thanks for helping me look into it and provided the links. sadly it didn't help as even without automatic quarantine, it still requires user to go to threat history section to manually set action and allow the file on device. I guess I should change the thread title to always allow on device, and I can decide to delete them or not, and only need windows defender to notify the user and thats it.

if user had to go through many clicks/mouse movement to "allow on device" then with/without quarantine doesn't do a thing.

You could always PM @z3r010 or @Brink and ask them to change it so it is more descriptive for your request.

    I hope this helps.

    Thank you for your reply.

I would be interested in screenshots showing what happens when you set Defender (as per my second link) to prompt the user rather than automatically quarantining an item.

If the actions necessary to respond to that don't suit you, consider using a 3rd party AV with whose behaviour you feel more comfortable.

thanks brink. I am still disappointed in the direction window is moving towards and win 11 seems even worse after trying it. I can only imagine what future window will look like.

I ended up giving up on windows defender entirely and just disabling it. making it hard for power users is a sad thing, first firefox, then windows and soon be all other programs.
