    Windows is preventing the editing of a scheduled task

    I am trying to change the time a scheduled task runs. The task, Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser, was created by Windows (in task scheduler its path is under Microsoft-Windows-Application Experience). Even if I launch Task Scheduler as an administrator I am prevented from either editing the task or deleting it/replacing it and I see a "Task Scheduler service is not available. Task Scheduler will attempt to reconnect to it." error window.

    I have attempted to edit the same task on another Windows 10 PC with the same results so I have to assume Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom , has somehow locked that task to prevent it being edited.

    Does anyone have a work around for this issue?

    Hello @sewing1243,

    Does this NOT work for you ? > Permanently Disabling Windows Compatibility Telemetry

    I hope this helps.

    Hi,

    1. Are you experiencing an issue with this- e.g. high resource usage?
    Why do you need to change it?

    2. That you can't change it seems to suggest an underlying problem.
    It seems I can.. FWIW on this occasion I rt clicked taskscd.msc, 'Run as admin' bearing in mind you said you couldn't change it.
    This is what I see:

    ==============
    In normal operation you should not be aware of this - I don't see it in my task manager list for example.

    Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry (CompatTelRunner.exe) is a free service in Windows 10 that is designed to contain technical data about how the device and its related software are working and sends the data to Microsoft regularly for future system improvement and user experience enhancement.

    This service is chosen by default when installing Windows 10 and is hardly noticed unless you find it occupies high CPU usage or disk usage in Task Manager, which can cause serious computer issues such as PC gets slow, the application fails to open or the system keeps crashing.
    There are some 'guides' saying they offer ways to deal with this if there is significant CPU usage.
    Some suggest trivial methods of disabling the scheduled task fail- it's reinstated.

    While that is an option, it does not "fix" the issue. I don't have a problem with this Microsoft "function" running, I just want to make it do it at a different time (currently because of its scheduled time, when the PC is off, it immediately runs when the PC is booted up, slowing down the PC until it completes). I can edit every other task I tried, just not that one.
