RtlService.exe (32 bit) Excessive CPU Usage - HP Pavilion G6--1155sv

I am fixing an HP Pavilion G6-1155sv for a friend. After starting, a few minutes later, the fan works at top speed chucking out tons of heat and in Task manager I can see the process RtlService.exe (32 bit) is using anywhere between 50-70% of the CPU resources. This makes the computer very slow. If I end the task in task manager then the fan goes quiet and everything is back to normal. The computer seems to work OK without this service (RtlService.exe 32 bit). How can I solve this issue? Your advice would be appreciated.

    Kind regards
    Chris

PS this is a 64 bit machine that was upgraded from Win 7. Should there be any 32 bit drivers?

    Hi, apparently:
    What is RtlService.exe?

RtlService.exe is an executable file that is part of the REALTEK RTL8185 Wireless LAN Software program developed by Realtek Semiconductor Corp.. The software is usually about 4.91 MB in size.
    - which may provide a clue.

    More:
RtlService.exe Windows process - What is it?

Consider whether that driver is necessary/relevant/ needs updating for that machine.

You might be able to find another version one way or another.

The PC seems to be from around 2011

64 bit drivers to Win 8 are listed:

This is what I would do:

It's your wireless REALTEK LAN driver.

    You can try:
    1) Search for, and open, Services
    on your computer.
    2) Find that entry there
    3) Double click the item, and press: Stop
    4) Now try your internet. [Is your computer also connected using a wired ethernet connection at all?]
If Stopping it doesn't affect the internet, then you can also Disable it from starting up with the computer, in that same window.

Thank you very much Dalchina and Pepanee. I will check the file size to see if it is within specs and check if there is a better driver and report back.

    Kind regards

Here is the update. Stopping "RtlService.exe" in task manager does not prevent the Lan ethernet from working

I installed the Win 8 version Of the Realtec Lan driver from the HP website (about 5.7 Mbt). The problem of the high CPU usage persisted. So I disabled the "RtlService.exe" from startup. However that did not work and somehow it continued to run. I tried enabling and disabling again in startup and rebooted but to no avail. There was also an annoying Realtec Lan utility window that appeared after every startup that I had to close manually.

So in the end, I uninstalled the Realtec Lan driver and utility in Control Panel. That seemed to solve the problem. Lan/Ethernet internet works fine. I scanned for hardware changes in device manager and there are no question marks.

So it seems that I am better off without this Realtec Driver/Software.

Thank you all for your help and support.

    Kind regards
    Chris

Sounds good. Yes, my next suggestion was to, that if Disabling it lets your internet still work, then to Uninstall the Realtec entry in your programs, since it is most likely only the Software, and the driver would still work so you can use the internet. There's also a possibility that there is a driver for your internet that is auto-installed so you can use the internet, without the Realtek Utility.

So if your internet works without the Realteck Utilities, then that's perfect; since your internet works, then that software is not required. Better off without it as long as the internet works.

Suggest you check what hardware is actually present just to make sense of this.

    E.g. Speccy (free).

My screenshot (post #2) indicates some other options that may be present in your PC.

Thank you Dalchina for suggesting Speccy. It's a neat programe!

Update. The computer was stable as per my previous post.

After uninstalling the Realtec Ethernet controller Software from control panel (Realtec PCle FE Family Controller), device manager showed it reverted back from a 2015 driver to a 2011 driver. Screenshot below.

RtlService.exe (32 bit) Excessive CPU Usage - HP Pavilion G6--1155sv-capture.png

In the meantime I installed a 2019 driver which appears to be stable.

RtlService.exe (32 bit) Excessive CPU Usage - HP Pavilion G6--1155sv-capture3.png

The ethernet works fine. I cant see RtlService.exe running in processes. In fact there is no such file present in the Realtec x86 (2019 driver) programe files, so maybe its not needed.

    According to Speccy:
    Network
You are connected to the internet
Connected through Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller

Thank you all for your help.

    Kind regards
    Chris
