So, I have to type in what is a not very natural position for my hands.

When done the touchpad remembers this until you sign off. This must be done again after next sign in / wakeup / reboot:
Works for me, I'm rebooting / waking up the PC max once or twice a day so an extra 10 seconds is not a big deal for me.

Thanks, Kari, but I can't get there from here. There is nothing I can find to refer to the Synaptics Mouse or Touchpad.
I've searched my system and this is all I can find and it isn't like yours. Sigh . . .
The Synaptics tab is missing so I'd guess you don't have the synaptic driver installed/turned on. Check in device manager if it's at least installed. I can tell you Synaptics was one of the drivers that I tried to install on my ASUS laptop(tried to install Win8.1 driver because the laptop is a Win7) and it caused an unrepairable BSOD(hello reinstall).
I agree with Cliff, your screenshot shows the properties for a mouse, not for the touchpad. Not only the missing tab but also the image of the device reveals that, compare here mine on left and yours on right:This usually means that the (Synaptics) touchpad driver is not installed. Check the Device Manager, I have not bothered to install the latest driver from Synaptics or my laptop's manufacturer's site because this old driver Windows installed automatically works for me:

I am so happy I don't have your problems.
This is under discussion in another thread. I have Dell computers, which all have "Alp" Touchpads. These can be disabled through their interface.
