For what ever reason I'm unable to save restore points.
I have protection enabled with 5% space on W-10 on a ssd all by itself. Dual boot with W-7.
No matter how you set them you must do this also.

Also, in WTP "Show windows contents while dragging" has to be enabled in visual effects to enable snapping; in W8.1 it doesn't!?

'Anyhoo', I'm not crazy about snapping except for dragging and dropping files, that's about it. I don't like tiny windows and try to avoid scroll bars, especially horizontal ones!

Anybody in Windows 8.1 right now that could check this real quick: Renaming a file or folder with an inappropriate character; does it stop you until you change the character or not?
(Up to my neck in updates!)

    * and ? produced another letter same as the on to the left of it but / produced error and refusal to rename. Tried "FILM?S" and it renamed to FILMMS, FILM/S was refused.

Hmmm..., that's what I thought; thanks Mike.
In WTP it leaves the inappropriate character out and lets you keep typing.

I thought it made you remove the inappropriate character by backspace first before you could continue typing.

Tried it in both Win8 and Win10 - same results on both. The rename stops input and displays the special character message. I did not see any character replacement and I was allowed to continue typing a name using valid characters.

Is there a specific character that is causing what you see? I think I tried every character on the keyboard (no alt ###) and only the ones that are shown in the warning got flagged.

Here's the file with all valid special characters (+0-9)

    Full Screen Width

    I don't like horizontal scrollbars either. :)

You can easily do "full screen width" snapping in W10 b9841 using the keyboard shortcuts (you couldn’t in W7. I don't think the W8 series could either).
