Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16281

I want to say a hearty thank you to everyone who gave input into my TouchPad problem. After installing the driver, I can now disable it in favor of my mouse. This a temporary solution and has to be reapplied every time I boot up, but that's OK for now.

Again, thanks to everyone who helped; I now know more than I ever wanted to know about the mouse vs touchpad!

Perhaps you could write a batch file that automatically disables the driver when you log in (i.e. put it in the Startup folder).

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16281

I just did some searching, and now know why some of us had the issue of "This app can't open" and some of us did not!

So, without further ado, rather than try to explain what happened, I'll just give some excerpts from two threads on the Insider Community Forum.

    This app can't open

    Tester Thread here
    : http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/i...9-aa29c98da4dc

Tester: I am not able to run the Excel Preview and Word Preview apps on my test Windows 10 computer. According to the app store, they're installed, but when I run them, I get the following error. It says "this app can't open", Check the Windows Store for more info.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled both multiple times. I'm not sure where to look to find more information about this issue, but it's preventing me from trying out these applications. The OneNote Preview app that was preinstalled with this 9926 build of Windows 10 starts and runs perfectly.

    Thanks in advance,

Reply from Andrew Moss – Microsoft: Thank you for trying out the Preview versions of our new Apps. As these aren't final yet we do expect to see some errors and issues which we will be fixing. We have found there was a problem in our licensing service which, in certain cases, would cause the apps to cease working as they had been configured with an incorrect license. We’ve now deployed a fix. I appreciate that you may have tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the apps without success before, but this was prior to the change that has been made. Please try uninstalling and reinstalling the Apps again, and let us know whether this resolves the issue, and once again thank you for trying them out.

Vinod Archak – Microsoft: We are contacting some of you through Private Message for the collection of some diagnostic information.

This app can't open – workaround

Once again let me thank all the people that have been trying out our Preview Apps. We have identified the root causes of the problem that is causing the Office Apps to fail to open – sometimes with an error message saying “This app can’t open”.

There was an issue with the Store Licensing Service which meant that the Preview Apps were given a license that timed out far too quickly. This was fixed on 2/23. Unfortunately, this exposed another issue whereby the Store would fail to acquire a new license if one already existed – regardless of whether the license had expired. Removing an app and installing again doesn’t clear the cache, so even if you do this the app still fails to acquire a new license on startup. So basically if you installed the app prior to 2/23 then you would hit this issue and removing and reinstalling the app won't fix the problem.

We’re currently working on getting a fix into a Windows update, and I will shortly be posting how you can manually work around this in the meantime.

Stay tuned, and once again thank you for taking part on the Office Preview program.

One last report on this saga: This morning when I booted into Windows 10 on this laptop, I forgot to go in and disable the TouchPad. Which should have given me a , but when I started to type (Whoops, I didn't disable . . .), I found that the TouchPad still doesn't interfere with my typing! Yay!

My take on this is that disable "sticks" on some laptops and doesn't on others. Just a wild guess, of course.

    Thanks again, everyone.

I am now going to get the Office Apps Preview and see if this holds true.

Still doesn't work for me. I uninstalled, reinstalled, Start shows it as a recent install, fails with the same message. What's more, Store shows the "open" box grayed out, after it "installs".

George, there's a workaround batch file given in the second thread link. I purposely didn't copy that because there might be other material you need to read.

Somehow, I think that batch file will clear some kind of cache so it will work.

Other than the built in feedback app - because it has a bug for me on build 10166 and is just a blue windows with a logo that doesn't provide any means to do anything with it. On build 10166, I'm finding there to be many bugs. Some of them are: ...
