Windows 10 64 bit consistently will NOT cold boot.

Hey all, any help will be greatly appreciated! I will try and describe my problem as best I can. Whenever I turn my computer off (full shutdown) it will not boot back up properly unless I hit the restart switch during the windows loading icon. The spinning dots never start, and I am at a loss. everything works just fine after hitting the reset switch duriong the boot sequence. For example, I have noticed this issue for a few days now, and decided to try and consistently replicate it. I can replicate it every time. For example, I went to turn on my computer this morning and then jumped in the shower because I knew it would have booted up by then if there wasn't a problem. To my dismay, when I got out of the shower and looked, the blue windows logo was still there and there were no dots spinning (indicating windows is starting up) I have never gotten a bsod so I am at my wit's end. Again, hitting the reset switch fixes it immediately and it boots up normally in about my normal 5 seconds. I have used a script made by Brink to disable the fast startup and it seemed to have worked. However, the issue still persists. Here is my running environment, and if necessary ALL peripherals. btw this is a new system I built for college last month, and it worked perfectly except I never turned off my computer at home (because it wasnt right next to my bed) so I didnt notice it until now that I am moved into residence.

Your system may not like fast startup, which hangs waiting for the cached image to boot. but you shouldn't need a script to disable it:

Try the following:

In Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Power Options -> Choose what the power buttons do, then under the Shutdown settings section, Untick the "Turn on fast startup (recommended)".

Your next option is a simple one: You try with just mse/KB connected and nothing else, then add a device one at a time until it stops working, etc.

Thanks so much for the reply! That is my problem. I needed a script to disable it because I simply didnt have an option to in the power settings. Bizarre, eh? I will post a screen. Oh and I did hit "change settings that are currently unavailable"

and followed it by opening an elevated command prompt and typing powercfg /hibernate on.
This allowed the fast start-up setting to be displayed, however it is unchecked and the problem still persists.

Yes, but to me, that indicates some user account perms issues on the system if you didn't see that right off.

My assumption is that you're using an admin account.

You could, as a test, make another admin account on that install and see if the setting appears for that one, then ascertain if on or off by default for it and test.

I don't know if that will help, but do know that I had the same double booting needed on my HP DV-7 laptop until I turned quick start off myself ...

I think the registry setting for hibernation and fast boot would carry over from this admin account registry would they not? Because if I am not mistaken, the windows registry is for the whole of the OS and not just one user account. I think that the setting for hibernation and fast boot is in the registry. If that is the case, then the fast boot setting should be disabled for the other account as well. I will report back with my findings when I make a new user account and try. Thanks.

OK so my findings are this: When I created the new admin account and went to power options, the setting was there and disabled. the windows default is the settings is enabled, which means the registry carries over between accounts. This also means that the setting is actually disabled like it says, so I have no idea. Any other ideas?

Try unplugging all of your USB devices before booting your machine. Sometimes a malfunctioning USB device can cause boot-up to freeze (but it doesn't explain why you can hit reset then subsequently boot up without an issue)....

OK thanks I'll shut down for about 10 minutes then boot back up with nothing plugged in. I actually think it may be my keyboard, but I refuse to believe it. It shows up as device descriptor failed when I plug in 2 of the USBs into USB2, but if I plug just the 1 into USB 3, it recognizes it fine. I'll report back with my findings.

Um, OK? I unplugged everything and shut down for about 20 minutes to ensure it was a proper cold boot. To my amazement after unplugging everything it boots up just fine. Nice to know that my brand spanking new keyboard causes windows to freeze on startup. I love it. I will try the test again, this time with everything but the keyboard plugged in. If it boots up properly I guess we know the problem, eh? Thanks for your help.
