Your choice depends on what you want to do with the information- in what context will you use it?

    - just to inspect?
    - in the context of file management?

If the latter, a tool that simply lists folders and sizes may not be the most appropriate.

If the former, a great tool.

And you can open the folder from it in Explorer. You can delete right from Treesize. And it automatically performs a scan showing all hidden and System folders. Quite versatile.

But the OP will need to decide for what purpose the folder size, etc. will be needed.

Their was a progeam by Moveax back in the XP days (worked in any OS) that intregrated a "size" column into windows explorer. I am currently searching for a download repository for old files such as MEGA to download it. It was called View Folder Size" or "View Foldersize". Moveax was sold to another company and the product was discontinued.
However it did have a lag in calculating folder sizes but did not appreciable slow down the computer as I remember.
Search old XP forums for this topic.

The blog entries are by Raymond Chen, a Microsoft developer since before Windows 95.
Links are dead, but I do wonder how a blogpost from 2004 (winXP) would answer this question properly.

Of course Microsoft could have shown folder sizes in Windows Explorer, and done it better than any third party file manager.

But they choose not to for reasons explained in posts #5 and #11. It certainly can be lightning fast on a small folder on a local drive. But on a network drive with a slow network connection (and there are plenty of those) it would be anything but fast. It could saturate the network bandwidth for lengthy periods of time, and all for a relatively minor feature. If it had come to that corporate IT managers would have demanded, begged that Microsoft not include this feature.
There's no reasons being explained in 5 and 11. And this argument about saturating network bandwidth doesn't make sense either.A query to NTFS' master file table does not result in network congestion level datasets. You are aware that you don't have to download a file to find out it's size, right? Also, I don't think networks crash under the load of a request that easily. It would just return a network timeout error.

I'll argue that calculating an acceptable approximation of a folder's size is not very hard/time consuming/difficult on an NTFS file system, networked or not. I have remote managed sizeable Windows systems (digital asset management servers) from a Macbook Finder would show me a column with sizes for folders on network drives without any problems, just like it does for local folders. When I learned Win10 doesn't I was astonished and now I'm even more astonished reading your pompous nonsense answers to a perfectly valid question. Boy do you sound annoyed when people still have questions after you already ended the matter.

Clearly it can be done by 3rd party file manager as I showed above.

Folder Size - easy search result. But note how they changed it to a pop-up from a column after Win 2k..

Not quite sure why I'm troubling to respond, thinking about it, given your comments above, which are generally a good way to deter potential respondents.

FWIW, I have come to prefer WizTree because of its nicely colored treegraphs, and its incredible speed (faster than TreeSize, MUCH faster than WinDirStat).

    To wit:
