Sorry about delay in updating, work & home life got in the way.

    I've downloaded dism++ and exported the install.esd to install.wim.

I replaced the install.esd on the USB stick.

I tested it by setting up windows on an old SSD I had spare and it worked fine so next step is to try fixing the 1TB drive.

    Back Again

Many thanks for all the advice I have taken the plunge again.

This is all done on the laptop with windows as C:
The SSD with the non-working windows is plugged in via USB and shows up as D:

    The story so far:

I downloaded a Windows 10 iso and extracted it to a folder using WinRAR

    Using Dism++10.1.1002.1B I converted the install.esd to install.esm

I placed install.esm in the extracted windows ISO folder sources\ and deleted install.esd

    I Created a folder on C: called mount\

I used Dism++10.1.1002.1B to mount the install.esm and pointed it to C:\mount\
I selected Windows 10 Pro as that is what is on the faulty install, the laptop is running windows 10 home

I opened a CMD prompt as administrator and ran the following command

    Dism /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:\mount\windows

Is all of the above correct?

I ask as I got the following error:

Windows 7 upgraded to 10 now stopped booting-2023-08-10-dism.png

    - - - Updated - - -

I tried running Dism with the SSD connected to the desktop & booting from a windows 10 USB with Dism++10.1.1002.1B on it.

FYI I made sure to change the drives in the command line as required.

    I got the following error:

    Error: 87
    The cleanup-Image option is unknown

You've already lost a lot of time trying to fix it.

I still suggest you do a clean install as described on post #30.

There is nothing like a clean install, specially on a computer that was upgraded from Win 7

I finally bit the bullet earlier last week & bought a new SSD.

I setup Win 10 & started installing software as & when I needed it.

I did find a couple of items in device manager that had missing drivers, the motherboard manufacturer doesn't support windows 10 so I tried the component manufacturers but I still have some items with missing drivers.

My main issue at the moment though is getting Firefox back to the way I used to have it with all of my add-ons and tweaks.

Is there a simple way to do this as I still have the SSD with all of my none functioning windows 10 on it.

Yes. You need to copy your Firefox profile from the old SSD to the new one. You will find the profile in:

    C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\rhyt6odm.default

The profile folder name (rhyt6odm.default in my example above) will almost certainly be different on each install. What matters is the contents of the profile folder. Delete everything in the new one, then copy the contents of the old one into it.

Install firefox. Start it up. Close it.

Go to folder options and dot Show hidden >apply>ok

    Delete your userprofile\appdata\roaming\mozilla folder
Copy in your userprofile\appdata\roaming\mozilla folder from your previous installation.

    thunderbird can be done similarly

Firefox up and running, thank you to both posters.

New issue is window alignment, I run winsize so that windows open in the same location, but tiling windows isn't working as it did before, please see screengrab below.

For some reason the windows are not filling the screen they have a border around them.

    Thank you for the info.

    I'll give powertools a try.

I don't understand it though as the laptop I was using while my desktop was down aligned the windows fine, and both had windows 10 on them.

    EDIT

One thing that is REALLY making my blood boil is view folder type.

In the past I've always had folders show as list & sorted by type.

I set this up as general view then just applied to all folders a sub folders,

No matter how many times I do this now though they keep reverting to any old format, images have thumbnails or details etc.

Is there any way of setting all folders to show the same?

Even if I have to create a batch file that I have to run every boot up.
