Win10 behavior, disabled DNS server but can't map using IP? Win7 works

Hi, was hoping to get some info if this is now the new behavior.

I've highly optimized a laptop, minimal services. No DHCP or DNS similar to Win 7 laptop. In Win7 I can set the static IP and set the DNS server to be the same as Gateway and i can map to a network drive via IP no problem.

In Windows 10 however that is not possible, only way around this is to turn on DNS, is this how Win 10 behaves? Why does Win 10 not preserve the manual input DNS when the service is disabled?

    cheers

You can apply a static IP address and Static DNS address in Windows 10 and 11.
After applying and saving the Static addresses,
Open a Command Prompt as Admin and type ipconfig /all.
You can copy the output and paste it in your next post

Hi, i'm aware of that, what I'm trying to tell you is that in Win 10 if you disable the DNS service, it no longer preserves the static DNS address you set. You can test it yourself, i don't know why Win10 behaves this way and it forces the service to be running to keep a static DNS address

confirmed for anyone else wondering this is a Windows 10 issue/requirement. Setting it using a GUI does not preserve the setting. Setting it as an Admin in cmd gives the error below. So Windows 10 does require DNS service to be running.

Now if i can figure out a way to connect to share via explorer without DNS service running....

C:\WINDOWS\system32>netsh interface ipv4 set dns name="Wireless Network Connection" static 11.18.1.1
The service has not been started.
